Who’s leading QB1 race in FALL practice?

Milroe starts vs MTSU
Ty plays a lot
Bama rolls

Milroe starts vs UT
Milroe has 2 TOs
Ty replaces
Bama rolls

Ty starts game 3 and struggles
Milroe comes in
Bama rolls

:)
As long as the last sentence in each above paragraph is true, I care nothing at all about the first two or three.
as long as Bama rolls and wins every game - even by one point- I don’t care one whit about who starts, who subs or who finishes. To quote someone I never liked at all, “Just win, baby.”

I’ve already explained how Jalen was the exception that proves the rule. Plus, Barnett started the year anyway, thus proving my point. Saban will only play a TF QB if he has no other choice.
Barnett got one series. That's it.

This feels very similar to that year in that there is no experienced QB with a ton of starts. Milroe may get the first snap too but if he is the guy for the whole season there is likely a reason for it besides Saban's loyalty

I think I have changed my vote to Lonergan. He wears #12. Seems like destiny to me.
From what I've heard of all the QBs I would like him to win it the most. If we're going to lose games might as well do it with a TF who clearly has some real talent to be a great QB.

But I also think he's the least likely

Barnett got 2 series. If he had played well, Jalen never starts. Again, the whole point is Saban simply doesn’t start TF QBs unless he has no other choice.

I guess I don't see that as an issue. If an older player is playing well and knows more of the playbook that's probably who you should play.

Again you’re missing the point. The older QB isn’t always the best option, yet he still gets the opportunity. Seriously, it’s simply mind-boggling Milroe is still on the team at this point, let alone getting most of the 1st team reps.

I can almost guarantee there were reservations about him long before the game ever kicked off and it was decided he would have a short leash. I’m really glad we have a cupcake to start the season so the coaches can see these guys play with live rounds coming at them. That should help tremendously in deciding who to go with even if the game is against inferior competition. My fear is everyone looks bad, but that my just my natural pessimism I fight showing through.

I guess I just don't agree. There are plenty of reports that Milroe did well at certain times and that Buchner and Simpson have looked bad at times. Not to mention Milroe's legs are basically neutralized I these scrimmages.

I think the larger issue is we don't have a great QB this year and the one with the best chance to be great is a TF who probably isn't great yet.

To be clear I don't really expect Milroe to be the guy for the whole season

Also, when has Saban ever really started and stuck with the wrong QB. The only time it's ever maybe happened was with Jalen vs Tua but I think there were reasons for that and Saban seems to learn from different situations

And pretty much every one of those was refuted by other people saying he still can’t throw and hasn’t progressed at all. I don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is I have seen Milroe play, and he isn’t a QB. If he hasn‘t made huge improvements yet is still getting most of the 1st team reps, then we are likely in trouble.

I agree with that. I’m mostly worried that Milroe is “the best we have” which isn’t great at all.

Lonergan had a certain “look” at A-Day from the other QBs. He just seemed to be in control with his mannerisms. Then you look at someone like Holstein (who was much more highly coveted as a recruit), and you’re like “Oof, he needs work”. Lonergan seems to already be there.
I agree. He handled himself very well at A-Day. Very much looked like he knew what he was doing. Even then, the game seemed "slower" to him than the others. Granted, I doubt he was playing against the 1's.... and I'm not saying he'll be ready for week and one. But for all the qb's on the field that day, he's the only one that I thought "had the look."

I guess but ALL of the reviews of the QBs have been inconsistent.

Idk that Milroe is an NFL QB but depending on where his passing is he could probably be a pretty effective college QB.

“ A house divided can not stand. “ Man does it look like we are headed that way this season. Whichever QB plays, the first bad play he is in for a tongue trashing from the or 2 or 3 QBs fans. My hope is someone ( don’t care who ) steps up pretty quickly and ends all this division. I’m going to pull like the Hulk for whoever starts. Someone has to get an opportunity to grow, mistakes and all.

I get what your saying but that has happened for every qb that we have ever had. (Even Bryce). I think our guys are made of tougher stuff than people realize.

Agree, because it wasn't as if Hurts' first few possessions against USC were any better. I don't think Coach Saban is married to the idea of starting the QB with the most seniority/experience at all. I think he just wants to play the one that is least likely to turn the ball over, which is almost always going to be the guy with more experience. Which is ironic considering Hurts fumbled his first ever snap. In 2017, I think Saban was worried that Tua was going to be reckless in relying on his natural throwing ability and turn the ball over.

Regarding the current QB battle, it's a little concerning how we are reaching conclusions on players, good and bad, with nothing more than second hand word-of-mouth information. And I don't mean just on this board, I was listening to a podcast and the guy was using terms like "from what I've seen", but the reality was he wasn't even there.

This, I think fans really downplay how quickly turnovers can get you beat. I know its boring to go with the safe choice but there is a reason its done a lot. For all the ooh' and Ahh's Tua brought us. When he screwed up, it was usually pretty bad. "I can't believe Saban didn't bring Tua into the auburn game". Ok, well if Tua goes in and throws 3 picks and we get blown out. Two of our qb's confidence is shot, we may miss the playoffs and we are in a really difficult position heading into 2018. These decisions aren't easy to make in the moment no matter what armchair coaches want you to believe.
