Game Thread: Navy vs Notre Dame (NBC 8/26 @ 1230p CT) and Others

Navy went for it on 4th down. Threw a long pass to around 10yd line but two open receivers ran into each other and neither caught it :(

ND just scored on 20yd run

Navy 0
ND 14

63 yd drive

1Q 1:03

ND QB is a 6th year transfer from Wake Forest, Sam Hartman. Looks like an old man relative to others. Pretty impressive showing for first game against inferior talent.

Just tied Colt McCoy with 112 career TDs

Navy 0
ND 28

The overreaction tomorrow will be pretty awesome.
Yeah I’ve already decided to spend the my Saturday afternoons this fall craft store shopping with the wife, hot yoga classes, and working on my antique bottle cap collection.
I’ll tune back in January when the Fighting Irish are playing in the national title game.

FCS: UNA vs #22 Mercer (2:30 CT on ESPN)

UNA 7
#22 Mercer 7
1Q 1:44

UNA qb TJ Smith is very athletic. UNA playing in D1-aa (I think 6th year) in the new football-only United Athletic Conference this year (formerly ASUN-WAC). Oliver Luck is the commissioner of the UAC.

Per the UNA website: " UNA's first time on the network's flagship channel since the 1995 Division II National Championship game in Florence. Saturday also marks the first regular season football game to air on ESPN in UNA history. "

How does Navy practice against a QB that can throw? They dont have any way to replicate this offense since their QBs are basically runners...puts them at a big disadvantage.

Notre dame threw as pass for a td but I am not sure they needed/need to throw another pass in the game with how inept a triple option team is throwing the ball and with how quick the clock is running.

For all those worried about more commercials because of the new clock rules. It seems likes they are LESS commercials, and they are shoving them in there anytime there is a review or a injury.

Navy looked really, really bad doing just about everything.

Once ND made a couple of adjustments on defense after Navy's first couple of drives it was over.

Hartman will make ND better, but I still doubt they've got all the pieces to challenge the top teams.

A few observations-
1) ND is improved. Maybe a 10+ win team. Helps when you have Chris Weinke 2.0 @ QB.
2) UNA is improved. They would’ve gotten beat by 21+ in this type of game the last couple of years.
3) Like what Clark Lea is doing @ Vandy. They might get bowl eligible this year.
4) Navy is hard to watch. Especially on D
