Alabama QBs in 2024

It’s not that JM isn’t a QB, he is and he’s an effective one. It’s that he’s an effective QB at the expense of all the other weapons on offense. CNS always talks about having a point guard at QB, JM is a shooting guard.

I'd be interested to see your evidence in how JM is in any way an effective QB.
Not digging on you or calling you out. Genuine question.

I think it's fair to say that a QB that leads his team to an SEC championship is an effective QB.

To turn the question back on you, can you name a QB that led his team to an SEC championship who was ineffective?

No, we wouldn't.
Even if the oline had played like they did v UGA UM would still have forced JM to make throws he couldn't make and the plays would still have broken down.
It's reasonable to argue that if the O-line had played as well as it did against UGA that we would have won. It doesn't prove we would have won, but it certainly would have gone a long way towards winning.

When you have arguably the best players its not their fault because it's the poor coaching. When you turn over coaches as often as you brush your teeth you are going to have some real troubles. We settled for both O and D coaches. We got out coached last night. I am glad we won the SEC and beat Georgia preventing the threepeat. That is enough for me this year.

Having sack and snap issues every game this year is a product of really poor coaching. This can also happen when you are fitting a round peg into a square hole. (JM) It's been keystone cops all year. No more sandlot! We have plenty of running backs that can run. Give me AJ McCarron every day of the week. That shouldn't be very hard to find. Oh we have one... his name is Simpson.

Seems to me this problem pokes its head up every few years at bama. Do we go with the RB/QB - live by the sword or die by the sword. Or do we go with the guy that can actually execute the position. Happy New Year Crimson Faithful!

You have to have the players that are able to run a full play book in order to get/be better.
We had to make the playbook so simple for our qb that the UM dc got a good night sleep because he KNEW the qb couldn't/wouldn't throw slants or screen and can't throw over the middle to back the defense up and have to cover the whole filed instead of pretty much covering deep throws.

I would submit that given the limitations on offense this may have been one of the best coaching jobs of CNS' tenure.

Good question…my evidence is an SEC title.

All due respect, he wasn't a world beater in that game.
Had Kirby been smart and not worried so much about JM running and blitzed we would likely not have won the SEC Championship.
It was truly a miracle we won at AU.
Could have very well have lost against UT and others had they blitzed more.

Give REAL evidence.

Mich was focused on stopping Jalen. If Alabama had simply run the ball more and had run it with Justice Haynes, they would have likely won by 10-17 points. Because of the focus on JM, Mich could not stop Alabama's running game. JM had a positive impact on the game because of the focus he demanded. Mich chose to die by the run game, but Alabama did not stay with it. Jase had a good game but Haynes is at another level.

JM had his opportunities and came up short.

I really enjoyed watching JM compete and improve over the course of this season. Yesterday does not erase the progress he's made, and it does not change the trajectory of JM's improvement. I am excited to see JM continue to develop next year as the starting QB for Alabama.

Are you heavily invested in LANK?

Next year, JM will be a second year starter. He’s improved and will continue to improve next year. How have we done “nothing” to improve at QB?

I know some folks on here have written-off JM as not being talented enough or capable of improving to the extent needed. That’s all well and good, but the folks actually making those decisions do not share those opinions.

I'd be willing to bet you even money that some coaches don't hold your same view.

We could have lost to AU and UT and we could have beaten TX and MI...but we didn't in any of those scenarios.

To my question above, can you name one QB that won an SEC championship who wasn't effective?

Have you listened to CNS's post-game press conference or his interview with MacAfee today? He specifically references these as issues that impacted the QB, but that we're not the QB's fault.

General question. Does it matter what our coaching staff says or does? Do their actions and statements carry any weight? Have you considered whether their decisions are based on information, expertise, and intuition that you, as someone extremal to the program, do not have or possesses?

This leads me to a more direct question. Grogan11 - what makes you such an expert on how to build a "winning program"? Built a few have you? The reason I believe in JM is because CNS clearly believes in JM. I know this because of what CNS says and what he does. He uses the media to send messages to his players. When CNS says that a player has transformed or improved in one area or another, you know it's a fact because if wasn't, his teammates would know it, and the platform would lose credibility. In addition to this, I know that JM has worked very hard for three years to earn the QB1 position at Alabama.
What Saban says to the media may be for recruiting or public relations purposes. He consistently doesn't discuss the inner workings of coaches player evaluations. I would say that a high percentage of us don't have the ability to coach and evaluate players. But many of us believe our eyes versus what we hear during a media interview.

No way we would've gotten that far with Simpson.

And you know this how?
He was allowed to play one half of football, in which he made some really good throws AND ran the ball well, so in reality was not really ever given a chance.
Say what you will but Simpson is absolutely a better passer and the better qb in the mental game.
But for whatever reason the team chosae lank instead of being able to read defenses and make good throws.

Seems like it's an opinion just like the ones you've been putting forth (and stated as if they are some kind of truth I might add.)

I'm starting to smell cow patties in your posts.

I was talking to a buddy of mine today who is not an Alabama fan, and we were discussing Milroe. He reminded me how pedestrian Burrow seemed after his first season at LSU. By no means am I suggesting that Milroe is going to have a season next year like Burrow did in 2019, nor am I suggesting they are the same type of quarterback. However, the point is that a QB, even one that's been around a few seasons, can make significant progress from one year to the next. As an aside, Burrow's and Milroe's stats from their first year as a starter are pretty comparable.

I think a truly open competition will produce the best starting QB1 for Alabama in 2024. I HOPE Nick brings in all the quarterbacks and states the QB1 position is wide open going into the offseason. I've been around and played in organized sports long enough to know that when players feel like or KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt a position is open for competition it produces the best starter, regardless of who it ultimately is.

I placed this is the wrong thread because for some reason it all comes back to the QB.

Who knows if Simpson will even be the back-up next year? He might have his own battle for the back-up slot with Sayin. What about Lonergan? Simpson may the Ashley Wilkes of Bama fans, but he's no shoe-in for number 2!
