The candidates to replace Nick Saban
by Jess Nicholas, TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief

In the past, coaching searches for the Alabama football head coach’s job have drawn out over weeks (or months) and have involved a list of names the approximate length of a grocery shopping list at Thanksgiving.

TideFans.com does not expect this coaching search to take very long at all. As of this writing (approximately 9 p.m., Jan. 10), we would not be surprised to see Alabama fill its vacancy by the coming weekend.

Here are 13 names, in order, of who we are hearing will be connected to the job, with a distinct drop-off after our No. 6 name in terms of likelihood of being hired.

I am warming to the idea of Lanning as well. The relatively short resume scares me a bit, but his pedigree seems very solid. A first-time head coach at a P5 program doesn't go 22-4 by accident, generally speaking. There's plenty of guys who get their first gig at a P5 program and promptly run it into the ditch. Most importantly, he seems to have an extremely solid grasp on modern recruiting and the transfer portal.

I am surprised to see Kiffin on that list given what I've heard about his character on this board and elsewhere in the analog world.

I also think that we need to check our expectations. It would be a miracle for the man who follows Nick Saban to succeed like him. Whoever takes the job will need time to grow into it.

I am too. 3 of his 4 losses were against UGA (2022 Champion) and Washington (2023 runner up). So It's not like he was losing head scratchers.

Whoever it is, they dont have to like the portal or NIL but they have to be prepared to take advantage of it. Thats the unfortunate situation today.

I don't get why Ryans is even a remote consideration. He's doing well at Houston. He's a little busy right now what with them in the playoffs. Plus, if we didn't learn from the history that was Shula, then we will repeat it with such a hire. A Bama alum NFL guy with no experience at the collegiate level didn't work out well last time
