UPDATE ...

Added a whole bunch of names to the original Page 1 post but about half those names in italic, I don't think are serious candidates. Still, we're going to track every rumor as best we can. There are about 100 ways to skin the OC cat (and could end up seeing the other offensive positions juggled to the point that we have to end up hiring a TE or WR coach even though we currently already have one), so my eyes will be on the OL hire more than anything.

Also, I realize that information like this only seems to seep out after someone leaves, but I was told today that one of the things that sold Saban on DeBoer was after interviewing Grubb. The implication there is that UW was doing a bunch of cool things ... and it might have been coming from someone other than the OC. Then refer to points 1 and 2, above.
Have you heard any evidence that Saban actually extended an offer to Grubb when he was down a year ago interviewing?

I know the common narrative is that he turned us down, but I've also heard from someone close the program that he might not have won Saban over when he was down, and Grubb's "side" ended up being that he turned it down. That could be consistent with your implication here.

What are Sheridan and Shepard's track histories? How are they regarded amongst peers? Not trying to incite anything negative-- presuming we go with 1 OC or both as Co-OCs, but I just want to know what their peers think of them.

I'm a bit confused about this statement. "Sold Saban on DeBoer" for what?

I considered quoting a few of these comments but I don't want to single anyone out for this, but I do want to make a statement:

Some of you seriously are overreacting. Go lie down for an hour or two.

There is a difference between "suboptimal" and "disaster." A wide gulf of difference, for that matter. There is also some incorrect information being expressed in this thread and it seems to be throwing people off.

1. Grubb and DeBoer have not always been together. Grubb was at Fresno while DeBoer was at Indiana. You might want to look at how Grubb's offense performed when they weren't together, versus how they did when they were together (or how DeBoer did when he was on his own, by comparison).

2. We didn't hire DeBoer to get to Grubb, in any situation.

3. News broke of his hiring in Seattle with an hour to go before the transfer portal deadline, and probably wouldn't have broken then had he not gone out for a beer with a pair of Seahawks execs and been recognized. Given Byrne's comments about there being a backup plan in place already, do you think we might have known this was coming?

4. The loss of Huff hurts worse than Grubb, IMO, but it isn't unmanageable. The idea that there are only a handful of good OL coaches out there is farcical.

5. I expect the next OC to be either Sheridan or Shephard, or someone DeBoer has already worked with. Getting Missouri OC Kirby Moore wouldn't just be a small coup, it would pretty much be like nothing had ever happened with Grubb. That leaves us replacing just Huff, and while that will be a tough hire to get right, it's far from impossible.

Also, I realize that information like this only seems to seep out after someone leaves, but I was told today that one of the things that sold Saban on DeBoer was after interviewing Grubb. Thank you Jess. You are very respected on this forum, and when you say what the majority of us would like to say, it carries a lot more clout. Some of these folks are fans of other schools, trying to stir things up for the fun of it. Some of these folks are our resident Eeyores who see the world through half-empty glasses. Most of us just want to keep up with what’s going on…without dealing with other people‘s personal demons.

I would hire Kirby Moore from Missouri I understand him and CKD know one another well and hire Sam Pitman as OL coach. Pitman probably will be fired this year.
Pittman would be great, but from everything I've heard about Pittman, he may have too much integrity to abandon Arkansas this late in the game. Otherwise, I think it actually makes a lot of sense for both parties.

Shephard was also recruited by Saban either when we hired Holman Wiggins, or prior to the 2023 season. He's very well respected as a WR coach but his OC experience is three years as co-OC at Purdue. The problem with Shephard is that he's not going to be here long unless he gets that promotion. There was a real possibility he was going to get the UW OC job at one time. Also, when word initially broke of Grubb going to Seattle, Shephard was being rumored to follow him along with Huff. Bottom line, we're not keeping him as a WR coach for long. We either have to promote him, or lose him.

Nick Sheridan was OC/QB coach for two years at Indiana following DeBoer.

The real question is not what their peers think of them, but what DeBoer thinks of them. We hired DeBoer in part to get his system, so I don't think any of us want a "college of coaches" approach where DeBoer is trying to pull together a bunch of guys who don't think off the same page. For continuity's sake, he's likely to prioritize either working with guys he's been working with for years, or at least with guys whose philosophies match his. There may be some guys out there with better resumes, but if their philosophies don't line up, I'd rather they not be here.

Reddit is always an interesting place to get information. Millions of fans from every school you can think of.

Most laughed at Sheridan as the play caller saying he’s pretty bad. I forget where he was but it was fans of that School.

Reviews of Shephard at junior day with recruits and keeping players on board have been phenomenal.

He'd be a great hire.

Bama fans need to realize that whoever is hired we would be running deboers system. That has been the constant everywhere hes been as an oc or head coach.

I think we prioritize Shephard regardless and id be excited by that. Im pretty certain that if Saban had hired him it would have been as a co-oc or passing game coordinator for rees.

His offense in 2020 put up 36 on #8 Penn St, 38 on #23 Michigan, 35 on #3 Ohio State and several offensive players won major CFB awards. His 2021 campaign was terrible, but Penix went down for the year and the backup struggled mightily apparently.

I’ve honestly not seen many teams ever that had the Doak Walker, Biletnikoff, Mackey, and Maxwell winning QB on the same team. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Jess lists Khurtiss Riggs. This guy is intriguing. He spent 21 years coaching Arena Football. Has known DeBoer for many years. Linky, Clicky
