JessN: A Look Ahead to 2025 Roster Moves :: ADDED - 2024-2025 Portal Tracker

If there is anyone left that has any uncertainties as to why CNS retired, just have them read the last four or five posts in this thread.

College football programs will have to be operated like an NFL organization. That is what Bill Belichick is going to do at UNC. Teams are going to have to dedicate resources that mesh finances with talent retention and the identification of talent.

I think our coach is at the cutting edge of this. At the time it seemed odd that one of the 1st people off the plane when he arrived in Tuscaloosa was his football operations general manager. But after considering this, I realized that this position takes a lot off the head coach while identifying talent and building bridges that help with recruiting and talent retention.

Ya’ll try not to laugh, but where exactly in all these current and future machinations does “ college “ and associated academics fit into all this? I mean, players no longer apparently sit out for academic insufficiencies already. The only ones that I can think of might be the military academies and MAYBE Ivy League schools(?).

Simple answer: It doesn’t. Which always brings me back to overarching philosophical discussion of “Where does basically semi professional sports branded by the University actually fit the academic mission of the institution?”
I mean one might make the argument that successful sports programs drive the university’s brand awareness adding prestige and driving increased enrollment. But strictly an academic point of view, in my opinion it doesn’t.

Thank you sir. “ semi professional sports branded by the University…. “ . That’s an apt description.

So how does it work now with academics? If a player goes to zero classes and makes all Fs in the Spring, are 100-130 universities still letting him enroll and play sports in the Fall?

I mean... in the 80s and 90s there were always 2-4 academically ineligible players a year at any school not named Auburn with a great sociology program... But I can't recall this happening since the early 2000s!

Back home from being out of town a few days, we've got the original post updated as of 1/10/25. The only two players without a destination at the moment are WR Jaren Hamilton and S King Mack.
