Grubb to be next OC at Bama per ESPN

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

This ^^^ puts a little bit of a sour on this hire for me. Rumors swirled his wife or both he and his wife had no interest in living in Tuscaloosa, but I think it was the South in general not T Town specifically. He has an established pattern of showing he didn't want to be here, which started before CKD even got here. Saban has publicly said he tried to hire Grubb MULTIPLE TIMES and was turned down every time. Then he came with DeBoer and what seemed like 24 hours later bolted out of town on the first thing smoking. That establishes (for me) truth to the rumors of "they don't want to be here". So what's changed now from then other than he got fired and doesn't want to sit out of football for a year? His flight risk after one year is very, very likely, IMO. Which one year and done is something we do not need. Just color me "meh" on this hire...
I think everything you've said is accurate, but it is also just one way of looking at it. Grubb didn't want to move and leave Washington. He was paid 2 million a year at Washington. Rees was actually making less than that, so Saban would have been offering him a modest at best raise to move across the country and leave his friend.

He was the top paid offensive coordinator in college football, the top paid NFL offensive coordinator is making around 3 million. So, it's likely he was paid at least comparable to what Alabama was offering him, to not move and be the OC at Seattle. Furthermore there was talk he wanted the Washington HC job, well yeah, they are paying their coach 7.7 million a year of course he wanted that job.

The key here is there were only two jobs he could take that would allow him to stay where he is. Seattle or Washington, both are in the same city. That's it. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to move if they can make the same money or more. Having said that if he's successful will he get offers and consider moving? Sure, but if he's successful that's a good problem to have. Much better than the previous playcaller, who literally no one else wanted to hire as OC.

2 million in Seattle is not the same as 2 million in Tuscaloosa

I see this as good news for the program. Makes me wonder if anyone on the offensive side of the ball who just recently transferred to another program might re-consider? Anyone who had planned to stay think of changing now? Changing of the guard in the coaching staff now also involves shakeups, potentially, in the roster.

Moving is still pretty bad, especially for kids. They have to make all new friends, they have to change schools, it's very disruptive. If I was in the same type situation, I'd have very likely made the same call. In fact I've always been unhappy with how quick my parents were to move me from school to school, even when I was excelling. It made it very difficult to constantly have to adjust. So, this is one thing I am absolutely not blaming Grubb for doing. I get that he didn't seem to want to be there, but I also understand the situation.

Now, the only way he leaves for a better or comparable position is if he's successful at Alabama. Then, if Alabama wants they can go back to the same back-up plan OC they already had, so I don't really see the downside. Also, I imagine that a lot of the reasons his family had against moving to Tuscaloosa will kind of go away once they settle in and if anything they might be as unwilling to uproot again.

Read where CNS/Grubb never agreed on how it would work. CNS didn't offer cause Grubb wasn't promised he could make the changes he wanted.

Who knows what's the truth? We'll see how the south works for Grubb and we'll eventually get some clarity on all this.

But for now, I'm enjoying the outlook on a promising 2025 year of having a great returning D and what looks like a great opportunity for an offensive reset and return to being able to score more points!

Grubb would have been told that he would be expected to run Alabama's offense, with the freedom to add in a few wrinkles.

Right, and if Grubb wanted control to do his own thing then he walks away/no offer.

That would track with CNS saying he tried to hire him. Grubb had the right to agree to CNS terms or walk away.

Again, that's the narrative that someone here on TF's shared.

I am waiting on his opening press conference when he almost certainly gets asked questions about his past employment dealings and decisions with Alabama (both with Saban and DeBoer).

We lose Grubb in 2024...it's the end of the world.

We get Grubb in 2025...it's the end of the world.

Literally no one has said either of these things or are acted like this.

Exaggerations like this are just as annoying as the "annoying complainers" or the complainers complaining about the "annoying complainers".

It's okay for people to have opinions correct?

It's okay for people to express those opinions so long as no forum rules are being broken correct?

People should probably start experimenting with the forum's 'ignore' function.

It feels like it would solve a lot of issues.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I have mine, you have yours.

No one broke any rules.

It is what it is.
