Auburn claiming an additional seven(!!) national championships

"Auburn hasn't played a game since Nov. 30 against Alabama, and won't play again until their Aug. 29 trip to Baylor.
But the Tigers still won seven national titles over night."
:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
If they actually won the 1983 and 2004 titles (I was alive for those), why were they all crying so much about not winning the national title?

This would be like us claiming today we won the 1966 national championship because Sagarin and Berryman selectors recognized us as national champions.

"Auburn’s official national titles will now be: 1910 (new), 1913, 1914 (new), 1957, 1958 (new), 1983, 1993, 2004 (new) and 2010."

1910: Maxwell Ratings (Loren Maxwell), College Football Rankings (Kyle Matschke)
1913: Billingsley MOV (Margin of Victory) and NCAA Football Record Book
1914: James Howell’s Power Ratings System
1957: AP and NCAA Football Record Book
1958: Montgomery Full Season Championship (David Montgomery)
1983: Billingsley, FACT, Football Research, Sagarin, NY Times and NCAA Football Record Book
1993: National Championship Foundation and NCAA Football Record Book
2004: Several, including Darryl Perry and GBE College Football Ratings
2010: AP, BCS and NCAA Football Record Book

They probably have a legitimate gripe about 1983. By today's standards they were for sure robbed.

2004 maybe on the technicality that now there is no official NC that year but LOL at the 'Several' designation....hahahah.

1993 they were on probation so forget about it...lol

The rest were so long ago so meh, I dunno?

But this is hilarious because in Middle School and High School I clearly remember AU fans passionately arguing against many of Bama's claimed NCs as bogus and laughable.

I'm sure wherever they are today they of course have no issue with this update.

Now I may be in the minority on this, but I've always thought Wayne Atcheson's reach back attempt for us was - to put it mildly - pretty lame. I just have a real difficult time believing we should even be recognizing something the players on the team at the time didn't know they'd won.

Plus, I think the argument can be made that ANY national championship prior to 1992, which was a head-to-head meeting between 1 and 2 without dispute, can even be counted other than Penn State's in 1986. It's not that I think (like Auburn fans) that 1992 is a magical year and I want to include us, it's the fact it was the first year of the "Bowl Coalition", where the CFA conferences agreed to match up 1 vs 2 in the bowls IF those two teams were not going to the Rose Bowl. Even that one would be legitimately disputed IF Texas A/M had been able to beat Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.

They have a legit gripe about 1983. And just like when Ohio State was selected over TCU and/or Baylor, had Auburn been Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, or Notre Dame, they would have been selected national champions in 1983. AT THE WORST - it should have been a split title. They have a better claim to 1983 than we have to 1977.

2004 is in the "look, they at least deserved the opportunity" category, one of the rare misfires of the limited to two teams BCS.

The rest are a damn joke.

1958? You mean the year LSU won it by playing an extra game (because Auburn was on probation) and had an unblemished record? Auburn is now co-champion with LSU? They now get to say they went back-to-back?

I agree...with '41 being the most suspect.

Yet, barners for years griped/made fun of Bama for reaching back and claiming some of those old ones.

But now, what have they done?

Yeah, they are little brother and always will be.

This has the makings of a Seinfeld episode. “The extra championships are nice, but we’ve lost the jokes!”

The only thing this sad sack day shows is Auburn has irrefutably given up something they’ve always clutched dearly - the ability to criticize our delusion to any degree they perceive. They’ve joined up with us, but will be looked upon the much bigger joke for it based on the timing of when they did it relative to lack of recent success and the fact that anything in 2025 is subject to MUCH heavier scrutiny based on current research resources than when we staked our claims decades ago.

I mostly hope in doing this, they jinx themselves to a woefully unsuccessful future.

It's hilarious (and totally Auburn) for them to claim three NCs when they were on probation.

And the ones in the 1910s are a joke.
Well the family of Mike Donahue might take exception to that. Especially when they are at the renaming ceremony of the stadium since he now has the most national championships of any Auburn HC.

Are they gonna go buy rings for those players/player’s families to celebrate the newly claimed ones? Will Yella Fella foot that bill for them?

If you go back and look, they were very good teams, especially ‘13 and ‘14. Undefeated, and the 14’ wasn’t scored on. But, the big point was they never left the SE region and thus garnered no national respect in order to claim a national championship. That’s what makes our first championship what it is. We not only mastered the region but commanded the attention to be invited to the Rose Bowl to prove our worth on the nation’s biggest stage. That’s worthy. Not crossing the Miss. River or going above Tennessee’s border is not.

They’re retiring Cam’s number for Georgia. You watch. They’ll save this mess for us, and have a two hour long pregame “commemoration” of it to shove down our throats. If ever there would be a game to break form and drag them inside their own little voodoo patch, this would be the year to do it.

Auburn Until A Few Years Ago:
National championships will never exist in football until the day we have a playoff. Until then, it's all just talk.

Auburn Until Yesterday:
We've won five national titles, more than most teams, we should recognize them.

Auburn This Morning:
We've Won NINE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (during a time we said they didn't exist).
