AJ McCarron discussing Ryan Wiliams

The first line should raise concern.

ESPECIALLY when you consider this is a very notable former player of this program and someone who was on the sidelines. No one this close to the program should be making these comments in a public medium.
I think you are mistaken. A former player has the right to call out a player, in public, more than anyone else. If he doesn't like what AJ is saying, he can give back the money and take his therapy doll and go home.

Oh good grief…

He was simply pointing out what anyone who knows the game could clearly see.

A lot of the Bama players I saw Saturday need their feelings hurt after that performance. My sympathy gland is all dried up for their feelings.

Welcome to the harsh big money world of modern day SEC football and the NIL economy.

But even money aside there is an expectation of pride and effort that comes from wearing the Crimson uniform on the field that wasn't met versus FSU by a lot of the loafing I saw on TV.

Money or not it doesn't matter. That isn't how you talk about an 18 year old kid unless you're in the business of ruining careers. We've seen it before.

Nothing he said was even productive. He just ragged on him.
I agree. It’s just the nature of society. That man is an employee though, and these people help pay his outrageous salary. They feel like they can vent.

Like many have said, he's a adult, 18 yrsold, people criticize NFL, MLB, and NBA players because they get paid and are professionals, he gets paid as well as all the players so he is a professional so criticism is deserved goes with the territory

I just hope Williams and many others got their juice boxes, orange slices and snacks after the game….along with his game participation gold star to put on his locker. Certainly wouldn’t want him (and others) to feel the effort Saturday was subpar……

He needs to get some Smitty highlights and note how Smitty played. Smitty was fast, like RW, but he ran routes the right way. Played/blocked every play, even when he wasn't getting the ball.

He also didn't say much, but let his game do the talking.

I thought it was troubling that he got quoted a couple days before the game, saying something like "we are going to be the most explosive offense/nobody will stop us."

I don't understand giving the opposing team "free" motivation like that!!!

They are now professionals. When you start being paid for something you do, you're now in the professional realm. I don't care about the age. His agent, friends, or family members may need to pull him aside and let him know that. He's in the adult world now, where carrying emotional support dolls and painting his fingernails aren't thought of as "cute" anymore.

You're supposedly the best player on this team. More than likely making the most money on this team as well.

You don't get the luxury of taking the day off whenever you please. The University is paying Ryan top dollar to perform at a top dollar LEVEL.

This is the day and age we are living in with NIL. Just like every other adult on this board, we get paid to do a job. Do the job.

When the players were closer to being amateurs, I would give them some slack.
Now that they are employees making a lot of money, I am inclined to give them much less latitude.
He seems to devote a lot of attention to peripherals and not the craft of his profession. That is acceptable as long as you are performing on the pitch when it counts.
Someone that this young man trusts needs to tell him to grow up and act like a professional or he is going to cost himself a lot of money. Or, if he grows up a bit and starts performing up to his potential (which is high), he stands to make a lot of money. Either way, the choice is his, as are the consequences.

I would suspend for 1 week every player who was either loafing and/or engaged in the activities on that Friday evening. Go with who is left and let them learn a big lesson. This year's record is nothing compared to the lessons that they need to learn. Going forward the same measure will apply to every player every game.

This guy isn't going to suspend anyone for loafing, they might not like him anymore.

Smitty was the gunner on the punt team the year he won the heisman. How crazy is that?

The part I find troubling is the part where AJ accurately described the offseason. It is apparent he didnt hit the weight room. At 18, he shouldn’t have any trouble putting on muscle, I may be wrong, but the offseason looked to be just that, off season. One thing everyone noticed last year, he didnt catch with his hands. He should of been in front of the JUGS machine evry day. He still tries to catch with his arms and body. His HS coaches did him not favors, super talented kid, needs some guidance on what it takes to be a professional athlete. And he is a professional athlete.

Speaking of the offseason. When did the 4th quarter progam become optional? Jam Miller is one of the few that made gains this summer. I guess it truly is a return to the Mike Shula days .

I never thought I would see the day that a Bama football player would be wearing fingernail polish and bringing dolls to a football game. I hope we don't have any other players getting NIL deals with Mary Kay Cosmetics or with Victoria's Secret. If they do, instead of wearing eye black and jock straps, they will come out wearing makeup, eyeliner, panties, and G-strings. Act like a girl, play like a girl.

In one of my favorite films, Glory, an Irish drill sergeant is teaching the soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts how to be soldiers, starting with how to march. Sergeant Major Mulcahy hits one of the soldiers with his rifle butt because he screwed something up.
Col. Shaw pulls Mulcahy aside and says, "I wonder if you are treating these men too harshly."
Mulcahy thinks for a second and says, "The boy's your friend, is he?"
"We grew up together," Shaw says.
Mulcahy looks at Shaw and says, "Let him grow up some more."

That is where I am with college football players. They play a violent sport and they are now professionals. I did not want things this way. They did. Time to grow up.

I think there was an article showing weight changes and RW had gained some weight. IIRC it was something like 8 lbs. His legs do look a little thicker IMO.

But let's face it. Dropping passes/poor effort/trying to catch with one hand are bigger issues right now.

AJ has a right to express his opinion just like anyone else. When you do not perform at an elite program, you get criticized, especially at "blue blood" programs. Williams had a major drop in production the last 3-4 games last year. He also signed for some big NIL money. If you want to wear the Superman cape, you have to play like Superman. Former players at Bama set a standard with Coach Saban and they have a right to expect players to perform on Saturdays. I personally have no issue with what he said.
