I posted this link because it has something in it that I think is key at all level of sports. I've yet to play or coach a sport (at any level) that hasn't taught "toughness". Basketball, Football, Baseball, etc, they all want their players to be "tough" and "physical". Getting that way isn't done by just saying "we want to be physical and tough", you have to do things to instill it in your players and the culture of your team. Things have to be done at practice to instill toughness and physicality. I noticed in the article FSU implemented an exercise that I use on my youth level teams to create physical and mental toughness. One on one tug of war. This is a very physical exercise that we do at the end of every practice and the kids love it. But what it also does is develop (mentally and emotionally) toughness and physicality into the players because it is literally you against him. There's no teammates there to help, its all about you and him. FSU implemented this as part of their method to "get them back" to being tough and physical.

I wonder if our team does exercises and drills to instill individual toughness and physicality? The old school adults on the board who used to play youth and HS football have to remember "bull in the ring". That game, though it caused a lot of concussions, separated those who wanted to be out there from those who really didn't.

I remember my high school baseball coach used to run us and have us to specific workouts right after every practice. After we're all tired and ready to go.....we're sprinting til we almost puke, we're doing push ups and other exercises, competing against one another, cause no one wants to be last or be the weakest.

I don't see even that done anymore.

It isn't just instilling toughness physically and mentally....its bonding the players together. They all have that feeling of....we're going through this together.

The basketball drill I remember that created toughness was the 3 on 2 drill where the 2 defensive guys couldn't get off the court until they got the rebound or stopped the 3 offensive guys.

And it was basically no rules/fouls so it was really just about getting physical/pounding on each other.

Like Moon said, we ran those drills in basketball, our coach also, after 2hours of practice, would make us run laps, then shoot free throws showed mental toughness, every free throw you missed out of ten you ran extra laps until at least you only missed one or two

After watching FSU lose too Virginia last night, I may be wrong & I may get blasted for stating the this, I lay our loss against FSWho at the feet of our coaching staff..

I say that because we looked slower than FSU, when in actuality, we're just as fast as them team speed wise, we simply looked lost & unsure playing against FSWho..

We wasn't prepared for FSWho & the Gus Bus offense, there's nooooo excuse for that in a season opener, when there's plenty of tape we should've watched preparing for the Gus Bus offense..

When player's aren't sure what their assignment are, you get caught flat footed, in plays instead of naturally reacting too plays..

Making you.look slower on the football field, than you actually are, we didn't have that problem against Wisconsin & we stomped a mud hole in them..

Hopefully that loss woke our coaching staff preparation wise, the rest of the year, if it did we got the talent, too run the table against a brutal schedule coming up starting tonight against The Pup's..

I hope we get another shot against FSWho in the playoffs & right that wrong at the end of the year..

Not getting blasted by me. That was a failure of preparation. Even the lapses in individual effort were failures of preparation. That’s squarely at the feet of the coaching staff, and lack of team leadership.

But hopefully, that’s water under the bridge and it’s been corrected. We’ll find out tonight.

I agree, Confusion looks like lack of effort.

I remember a few years back that Saban was criticized for physical thud practices. Some like Herby said they were NFL like , and the possible reason for the slew of injuries we had back then.
I heard AA Mike Johnson recently say on the radio his realization he was not in HS anymore was Nick Saban’s first practice. After a hard practice they ran sprints, and if anyone didn’t run all out Nick added more. He said quitting crossed his mind. The funny thing about that story, He played his first year under Mike Shula.

i think the better question is not How FSU turned it around so quickly, but why Is the Norvell program such a roller coaster. Undefeated regular season, get blown out by 60 in a bowl game, near winless 2024, to an up and down so far 2025.

What did Florida State turn around exactly?
Their physicality is one of the main things they turned around. They out muscled us the entire game and though they lost last night they were hitting hard every play. They just went up against a team that kept punching back and it turned into a slugfest that they came up short. But compared to last years clown show, they turned a lot around.

You may want to start checking rosters. A lot of these teams who normally are talent deficient arent anymore. When would you ever think Texas Tech would have one of the most talented rosters? They do now. The portal and NIL has changed the game. Virginia will have players in the NFL.
