I've noticed the same. I've wondered if Nate (or our defensive staff) has placed too much emphasis on getting back on defense. Often, Sherrell is left alone under the basket. When we have a couple hang around and scrap for the ball, we come out OK, good hands. We ripped a couple of rebounds away from them. Most of the time, we just have no one there...
I think most of the rebounding lack on offense has to do with our offense. When a guy drives, we stand outside the 3 pt. line waiting for the dish. If the slasher doesn’t score, we’re not going to get the rebound since it’s not a “long rebound” IF the opponent plays perimeter defense.

As I’ve watched teams play that perimeter defense against us, I’ve wondered if we need to flip that script some and crash the boards ourselves when’s it’s obvious that’s the defensive philosophy. At least in that scenario, the guy driving might have someone cutting for a pass.

Maybe this needs to be a separate thread but I had this come to mind during last nights game.

I remember early in Oat's career at Alabama he STRESSED drawing charges on defense. That seemed to be one of the staples of his defense and we consistently drew them and in key moments as well.

The rule was changed for charges before the 2023 season and our defense seems like it has never quite been the same.

Does this rule change play a factor or did we see success because of some of our former assistant coaches/ players?

My untrained eyeball likes to say that it could be partly because of that rule, I'm curious to know what the well informed think.

Another integral part of Oats offense that is missing on this team is the lob to the dunker off the drive. Remember how often we scored off that with Cliff O., Mo D., Nelson, Pringle, Clowney, Bediako and Herb Jones? Gave us another option to add to the kick out off the drive; we don't have those guys on this team.

Yes, very much so. You’ll also notice they don’t call hand checks anymore.

Only barely and only because of dominant outings against cupcakes.
It's so frustrating because this may be CNOs best offense. If they could just hold their own... What could be
Doesn’t frustrate me. Because we’ve had VERY few cupcakes and have the 2nd hardest schedule in the country.

Rebounding is important But for this offense it’s like brakes on a Ferrari. You aren’t buying it for the brakes. And the brakes aren’t what gets you a friend in the passenger seat.

If we can't hold our own against poor rebounding teams like Georgia, who are going to score well and play almost as fast as us, we are in big time trouble. We're already going to struggle against the big, physical teams inside. I thought we were going to handle Georgia because it was a good matchup for us; they do what we do, we just do it better. But to allow them to shoot for such a high percentage and get dominated on the boards by a weak rebounding team is very troubling.

Never heard a basketball coach say rebounding was not very important; no matter what kind of offense you run.
Coach Oats post game after Georgia; "our rebounding issue is killing us right now, with our leading rebounders Wrightsell and Sherrill with 5 each it's going to be hard to win games"

I don't recall what the change was...but it sounds familiar. I'm thinking Herb Jones was a master at this (or maybe it was another player).

Your post, however, coincides with a running discussion of how CNO needs to adjust in some areas. All great coaches learn how to do this...Coach Bryant going to the Wishbone in the 70's to how CNS opened to recruiting passing QBs and having OCs that were more creative on offense.

I think this is where CNO is in his coaching development. Opposing teams have adjusted to how they defend us and, as you mention, some rules have changed and/or teams have figured out our defensive tendencies.

For instance, one thing I've noticed is how we pretty much dare teams to take the 12-15 foot jumper off the high screen. Perhaps CNO's analytics plays into this because he feels as though that is the least productive shot in basketball, but this I know, we regularly allow good shooting guards to feast on that shot.

Maybe CNO wants other teams to take that shot because he knows we don't have the rim protector he normally wants. Sherrell has his talents but jumping isn't one of them!

At any rate, good post. These are the kind of discussions that make this board more interesting during the season!

Yep! This is the worst "dunking" team CNO has put on the court. Jemison my be our best dunker, but in traffic he doesn't finish well. For a 7 footer, Sherrell doesn't get off the floor very well either. And that is a HUGE part of our offense. It was never more evident in the few games Beds was available.
They shot 53%, well above their average.

We shot 39%, well below our average.

Catchings had a career night.
It's true sometimes you just get "out-shot" but we have a tendency on defense to allow guys to have career nights.

Acuff, the Arkansas guard, scored 49 against us. BTW, that was the second highest scoring game of anybody in college basketball this season!
We are 200ish. But still are out rebounding opponents YTD.
Over all...on the season?

Good analogy, except a Ferrari needs brakes too.

And, what good is it if we outrebound teams that are our easiest opponents, but always get badly outrebounded against the tougher, bigger teams we struggle to beat?

The goal isn't to get more rebounds annually, the goal is to beat the teams we have trouble beating.

And if CNO is concerned about getting owned on the boards against teams we struggle to beat, why should we act like it doesn't matter?

On point! We WILL get eliminated from the Dance by a team that outrebounds us. It is our Achilles heel and it is just a matter of time.

Unless we go on an unprecedented shooting spree during the Dance, our inability to play against bigger, stronger teams this will take us down!

Sherrell has the type of body that ought to excell at rebounding. But who is our leading rebounder this year? True freshman Amari Allen, who is averaging 7.1 rebounds a game to Sherrell's 6.1.

As others keep saying, it's about "want to" and when a true freshman who is a 3 on your team is your leading rebounder, you are NOT a good rebounding team.

Did a little digging into the conference stats:

We are #16 (last) in Combined Opponent Rebounds, allowing over 40.3 a game.

Yet, we are #3 in Combined Team Rebounds, getting 40.7 a game.

Interpret that as you may, but our pace of play probably contributes to both with more shots being taken during one of our games by both teams since we push the pace.

But on the Combined Opponents Rebounds where we are last, the top teams are:

UT
Texas
Florida

That's three teams that beat us in conference play this year.

And the two teams above us in Combined Team Rebounds are:

UF
UT

This tracks to me because the two teams in the SECT that we most likely will struggle to beat us are UF and UT.

Okay, ya'll are right -- lol -- damn!

We suck! We should give up! Our rebounding is horrible. We whiffed in the portal. We aren't trying. Nate's isn't Wimp or CM. Philon Dribbles too much. Wrightsell can't stay healthy. on and on and on...

Sometimes you just have to laugh out loud at how far some of our fans go to be negative. It just gets comical after a while. It is exhausting...
