how many walk-on are we allowed and who do you think they will be--I hope C. Smith is one

Re: Invited walk-on

I'm not sure of the amount that will be invited or that will try to walk-on, but the squad size has to be reduced to 105 by September 1 (correct me if I'm wrong on the numbers). That means with 85 scholarshipped, there are twenty or so walk-ons in the fall. I think the walk-on roster expands in the spring as seniors leave and numbers are needed for spring drills.

Not sure about paticular walk-ons. I'm sure we'll have kickers and punters, as that is normal. I've heard about Michael DeJohn from Hoover possible walking-on, and Chris Smith has been mentioned. Other than that, I have no idea.

Re: Invited walk-on

Only those on the 105 man roster can participate in fall camp prior to to first day of classes. Once classes begin, the roster size is unlimited (although most coaches will limit it to 120-130 to keep practices manageable).

Greyshirts cannot participate in practices, but can use the weight room and other facilities.

BTW - One thing that's often overlooked regarding greyshirts. They enroll as part-time students (9 hours or less?) during the fall (greyshirt) semester. If they were full-time, the "5 years to play 4" clock would begin.

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

I hope C. Smith walks on at Bama if he gets the grades. I think he'll earn a scholarship eventually.

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

Yeah, I'd like to see DeJohn walk on at Bama, I think he's got some potential. He seems like he'd fit into CNS's scheme defensively if you ask me.

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

After all is said & done, the walk-on garners the utmost respect from me. The ultimate come from behind underdog, playing on heart, grit, & smarts. Especially the ones that prove everyone wrong, & not only make the team & earn a scholly, but go on to become a star. Coach Bryant had a special place in his heart for such guys, & that should never be diminished, IMHO!

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

DeJohn will be a good backup for Hall and even a good starter. Any other walkons that anybody knows about???

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

Correct me if i"m worry RTO, but I beleive there is a difference between "invited walk-ons" and "recruited walk-ons". If the wlk-on has been "recruited" by the staff, he cannot play in a game for his 1st two years. He can practice, work out, etc.; but he can't play in a game.

So my question about Dejohn, is he considered a "recruited" walk-on?
