Who was our last real "Enforcer" DB?

What player(s) comes to mind over the past 20 or so years that you'd consider a headhunter type in our secondary?

My memory is fading by the minute but while we've had a # of great DB's over this period (Teague, Langham, Shade, Bryant, Townsend, Harper, etc.), most of them seemed cut out of the great athlete/finesse mold.

I realize that bringing the lumber is not the main responsibility of a DB (especially the corners) but it's a nice added dimension when our guys bring some clean aggression to the table......not to mention the fact that our opponents might have one extra iota of doubt when coming across the middle.

Do we have anybody on the current roster that could somewhat fit this mold?

I would say our last great DB was Charlie Peprah. He was a good safety but he was a stud at CB. I think Simeon is a big play making CB, and Woodall could turn into a great safety.

I would say we have a couple on our roster right now who could very well be that "head hunter" type, Justin Woodall and Andy Davis. Woodall we all pretty much know about, but Andy Davis is a hard hitting safety as well. I think we'll see our fair share of this type of DB as long as CNS is here.

marcus spencer lived on the same floor as me in my dorm my freshman year ('97...when he was a walk on). i'll never forget he had cut out a picture from a newspaper of him hitting someone and put it on his door with a sign below it that said "ya'll look out for the night train." i don't even remember him being that hard of a hitter....although he was a tackling machine....but i loved it anyway. :biggrin2:

like i said, not sure if he was an enforcer.....but this thread reminded me of it.

From a big play standpoint, George Teague and Antonio Langham. Teague set the bar awfully high in the '93 Sugar Bowl. Many have come close, but I have to say he was the best.

Oh man you beat me to it, I was thinking the same two guys and I was also thinking Peprah and I wil alaways consider Harper one of our best this after what he did in the 2005 UA/UT game you know when he brought UT's hopes of winning to a rocky stop.

Teague is hands down for me. Who was the last DB we had that would come off the bench to hit a NFL receiver for show boating? I watch that Miami game and am awed at how physical they used to let them play.

Teague was a man playing with boys when he at Bama, in fact that entire secondary that year was the greatest secondary we have ever had. Like someone else said Marcus Spencer had a few hits that I can remember and I think it was in the Auburn game one year when he picked up a player by the shoulder pads and threw him to the ground!!!

Lee Ozmint was fairly physical and pretty darn big for his day .

Can I go back more than 20 years and speak of Tommy Wilcox and Jim Bob Harris?

Can I go back a littl more and bring up Bobby Johns?

BJ was my HS football coach at Erwin. Castille was a good one, I think he knocked himself out on several occasions, and who could forget Don Mcneals hit in the sugar bowl that set up the goal line stand.

Not to get too far off subject but I was at a Bama-Miss St. game at BDS during Wilcox's career (can't remember exact year) and our 1st & 2nd team QB's had gone down with injuries. Coach Bryant put Tommy in at QB for a few series until one of the top 2 QB's was healthy enough to go back in. The guy was actually playing both ways for part of the game. He got standing O's every time he came on the field. If I recall correctly, he was a storied QB coming out of HS in Louisiana. I think there were quite a few stud HS QB's that became stud DB's at Bama under Coach Bryant.
