The Million Dollar Band

There've been years it seems where there were 50 or more trumpets, and only 2 or 3 alternates, whereas ther are 20 trombones and 2 alternates, and 15 baritones and THREE alternates. If you want that deeper, fuller sound that JSU seems to aquire, wouldn't you want more on the low end? IMO, take out 3 clarinets and 3 altos and throw that low brass in there!! Low brass is where it's at, baby.

You also need the high end to make it gel, but that low brass makes your gut rattle when you're close to the field and really hits home in the stands.

Again, all that one needs to do is to take a que from the Southerners and just use the same percentages of each instrument but a larger band. Can you imagine if the Southerners had 350 members? Holy Cow, they would blow the upper decks off of BD with that number of members!

I understand the need for the alto and soprano range out of the woodwinds, but what I'm saying is the band - at least when I was there the last three years - was severely out of whack in terms of the whole "pyramid of sound" thing. 40 to 50 trumpets and 26 trombones is a recipe for a tinny sound. The baritones and trombones are just getting overwhelmed by the melos and trumpets, and it can't really be fixed unless you want to: a) have the lows over-blow and sound like crap or b) get more low brass.

I was actually agreeing with you, just doing so in an round about way.

So I just heard the arrangement of Dixieland Delight that will be part of the first show, and it was painful. I don't understand how Klesch can write pretty decent music for Carolina Crown, yet give the MDB such shoddy arrangements. I imagine that the music composition majors at UA could do a far better job for far cheaper.

And there is apparantly a Dave Matthews/Sweet Home Alabama medley for pregame. I am unexcited.
