Simeon Castille Update:

Arresting Officer: "Sgt., doesn't Alabama State Law require us to call Coach Saban when we arrest a football player. I'm asking you now because right here, standing behind the suspect is the appropriate time to ask. I am in no way trying to mess with the suspect. My intentions are pure and noble. I just need to know if I should whip out my cell phone right now and call Coach Saban since I have him on speed dial."

Well since these were University Police, I meant that there might be a UNIVERSITY policy, not a state law, requiring them to notify the coach.

Sure the statement may be the officer doing a CYA; but so was the Castille's characterization as him "talking" to his friends. When I talk to my friends I'm not screaming F*bombs and B**s in the middle of the street, challenging them to fight. If I were to do so, I would expect to get arrested. But that's just me and I don't have a crimson jersey.

Doesn't matter. The spin will now be that Castille gets off because he is an Alabama football player. I just happened to tune into 680 the Fan in Atlanta at the same moment they were talking about this. Yep, Castille gets off because he's a Bama player according to them.

What will they say he got away with? Acting the fool? Talking to loud? :)

People actually do judge you by the offense, there is nothing here.

I was under the impression that they were not university policemen.:cool2:

Somewhere in the world, a police officer probably died last night protecting the public. Think about that before spewing your hatred..."

This is total crap. This is akin to using the same analogy that many people like to use when anyone condemns the war in Iraq. People are always trying to say that if you don't support the war, you don't support our troops! One thing has nothing to do with the other. This action has nothing to do with all of the police in the world and frankly has nothing to do with this one cops entire career. This has to do with this one cop making a stupid decision and he's going to pay the price of public ridicule for it.

I'm sorry but that's the most ridiculous attempt at making people feel bad for coming down on one cop who may be a great officer, but made a stupid decision. Could the same not be said for many 1st time criminals? "Man, he was a great guy and I have no idea why he did that. He spent his entire life helping the poor and then he goes and kills somebody. It was totally out of character."

This statement goes for this unfortunate circumstance, and all other similar ones for athletes at other institutions:

This is a legal matter. It will be handled, good outcome or bad, by the legal system. It has very little to do with The University of Alabama, and very little to do with The Crimson Tide. When the athlete is out in public, on his own free time, he is not under the supervision of the University, a professor, or a football coach. If a football coach wishes to add punishment beyond what the legal system does, then so be it. If he does not, then so be it. A coach will have to live with the decision and results of punishing or not punishing. But for the fans and media to form a lynch mob wanting the coach to declare what he is doing with the player, only makes them look like a bunch of idiots. The legal matter is a public matter. The players coach, team, and family reactions to the situation is a private matter. The sooner everyone learns this (especially the "scoop-starved" media), the sooner you can get over the obsession with the secrecy behind a coach's restitution regimen. Have I explained it clearly enough????

Maybe Saban needs to sap more energy out of these guys so they don't have the legs to be walking around on the strip at 2AM.

Roll Tide Roll!! Can we just get to the football playing,.......and Just Win!

Nope. Football hasn't started yet so we're stuck discussing this. Most of what's being discussed on here has to do more with whether or not SC is guilty of anything from a legal perspective and whether or not the cops handled the matter appropriately. Some would argue that when a cop threatens to call your coach and tries to give you a lecture about representing UofA then you can't say this was purely a legal matter completely devoid of any outside influence.

Also you might not want to suggest that we shouldn't have opinions or curiosity about how Coach Saban should handle player discipline then suggest that he needs to sap more energy out of them so they won't be walking around the strip at 2AM. :biggrin2:

Did you read the post I quoted before jumping the gun there? I was railing against a guy who said "I hate cops".

You have a problem with my response towards someone wishing ill will towards all police?

If not, try reading in context before jumping the gun.

I'm glad someone has the good sense to state this. When I was on the streets over four years ago, it was a police officer that helped me get off the streets and has been like a father to me. When I was licensed for ministry recently...the only family members that were there were my grandparents...and Officer Berrey. It rubs me the wrong way when people cast hate upon an entire group of people for the actions of a minority,

Don't forget that the reverse is true too. I can't stand when people cast infallibility on a person because they belong to an organization. Every man should be judged on his own merits and not on his profession. I don't know the officer or the witnesses and I'm not willing to judge one person as being more trustworthy than the other.

You be dissin' my rims, I bring da ****** house on yo ***** *** head, ******. I ain't ****** frontin' yo.

*ratchet cuffs*

Yes sir, sorry officer.

So you admit that there is some "spin" in the police report.

Also he wasn't in the "middle" of the street. Have you never horsed around with your friends? I would never expect to be arrested for messing around with friends even if I dropped the F-bomb. A citation... maybe.

Why is it illegal to utter an obscenity, and why can i be fined for it?

Do i not have the right to stand in public and say whatever i want? As long as it isn't starting a riot? Maybe i slept through that part of my Government class?:conf2:

Um, actually, no.

You have a right to espouse any opinion you desire. You may hold any political, religious, or moral conviction you wish. You may endorse or refute the opinions of others, and you may feel free to congregate with like-thinking individuals. These rights are Constitutionally guaranteed and are irrefutable. The manner in which you do so, however, may legitimately be regulated if it is in the public domain.

Don't take this the wrong way: I would assume there is quite a bit of difference between "uttering" an obscenity, and standing the middle of a street and "yelling" it.

Someone else also said it, that what happens in the public domain like that is definitely regulated. I liken it to having the cops called to your house at 2 in the morning because a neighbor has complained you're partying too hard (music is too loud, etc.). It's your house, you can do what you want...but when the public and other people are involved (even inadvertently) then it becomes a whole other ballgame.

JMO.

The major key to the officers reason for arresting Simeon was that he was doing it in an aggressive way...but whats aggressive to me may not be aggressive to you...maybe the officer doesn't have a sense of humor.

Oh, and after reading through the police report again, what is non-verbal language, body language, sign language?

Jeez. After reading the police report, I can see why he was arrested. That cop is a IQ challenged individual no doubt. Police officers have sure dumbed down since I was a kid. Good grief Charley Brown, Forrest Gump is back in Tuscaloosa and working on the strip.

Roll Tide

That made me stop for a moment to. I would assume it's talking about just what you said, body language, etc.

Bit like brandishing a knife at someone without saying anything; they would probably still get the message.

Thats what i figured it just read odd.

News Flash WVUA is reporting that Simeon was back on the practice field today...and that says...?

Maybe he started miming in the street. That'd be more than reason enough to throw him into cuffs. He started acting as though he were trapped in a box and couldn't find his way out.
