Hotel in Atlanta for Bama-Clemson game

Wanting to take the wife and small kids to Bama/Clemson game. Have reservations at the Days Inn downtown, but was told that was a bad place to stay. WHere doyou recommend someone to stay? I would be willing to drive a few miles if necessary. Thanks

mgr, for a wife and kids, yes probably not the best place to stay...Location is great, as it's about a 20 minute walk to the dome, but it's not real nice...A bunch of friends and me went to the SECCG in '04 and stayed there, and we had no problems with it, but we also had a few cases of beer, some handles of whiskey, and were just looking to have a good party down there

That said, the hotel is not loud, so no problems sleeping, but the accomodations are not the Ritz-Carlton by any means...But, if you don't need anything fancy, it's fine

What all do you intend to do? If you are going to only attend the game and just need a place to stay then the recommendation would be different than if you plan to do some things while in town.

Don't stay at Days Inn. We stayed at the Hilton and a good experience.

One other note, whenever my wife and I go down there for concerts, football games, etc, we ususally stay at the Holiday Inn, Midtown...It's just on the North side as you come in on I-75...It's an easy drive (5-10 minutes) to and from the dome, and normally not tons of traffic...It's got a restaurant, bar, and contintental breakfast, and I have a good experience every time there...Only drawback is it's outside doors, and I know alot of women freak out about that, so just keep that in mind...

Is that the gay part of town? Over by one of the Jocks N Jills and not far from The Varsity? My wife and I stayed in that area, and it was nice-ish. Had a good time at Jocks n Jills and took the charter bus over to the Braves game.

Couple of questions needing answers before I can recommend anything:

1) How much are you planning on spending per night for hotel/motel?
2) How far are you willing to drive?

Is that the gay part of town? Over by one of the Jocks N Jills and not far from The Varsity? My wife and I stayed in that area, and it was nice-ish. Had a good time at Jocks n Jills and took the charter bus over to the Braves game.

I live in ATL and I really wouldn't recommend staying downtown. You could stay somewhere in Midtown or in Buckhead. There are several hotels near Lenox Mall that are within walking distance from the 2 Marta stations there, but those might be a little pricey. Marta is pretty convenient (not that fast but convenient) when it comes to going to the Dome. Hope that helps.

sounds like you were at the northside dr. exit.

is the game on Aug 30th? i only live 4 miles from the dome, and if its on the 30th i am going to do my best to make it.

i'm getting married the following weekend (sept 6th)

there are some nice hotels downtown, but they are pricey. you could stay out by the airport and take marta to the game. you could also stay out near six flags (dont know what the hotels are like out there) or out in douglasville and drive the 10-20 minutes to Marta on the westside.

then there is the clermont motor hotel. its not that far from the dome, and there is a really cool bar at the hotel. i think the rates are reasonable. may not be the best place for little kids

we didn't get hit on, but it's one of those parts of towns that a lot of cities have that has older homes, a largely gay population, and they fix up all the homes and drive up the value of that area of town. No, I didn't use that as my criteria for picking that hotel.

If you want to be able to walk to the game and back to your hotel you can choose from the Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott and Westin, all right there in the heart of downtown and only a few blocks from the Dome. They're all business class hotels and are similar to what you would find in any other major city. They aren't cheap, however. You could also try the Ritz but it's about 30 to 40% more than those already mentioned. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

You could stay in Midtown or Buckhead but the hotels there are just as expensive and then you'd have to deal with MARTA to get to the stadium. Not that there's anything wrong with MARTA, I use it when going to events downtown, it's just why bother if you don't need to.

I just stayed in Atlanta with my brother who attends Clemson. We stayed at the Ellis on Peachtree St. Had a wonderful experience. 4 star hotel for $90.00 a night and in the middle of everything on a street where cops patrol 24/7! My family had a great time.

there is a Marriott at Perimeter Mall that is walking distance to Marta that would be pretty convenient and as it is a business first kind of hotel they probably have great weekend rates. Also a W (nice but $$$) a Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza and a few other options. Also a lot around Lenox/Phipps and in Midtown. I'd stay away from Downtown as there isn't too much to do downtown at night. midtown is the better option. Midtown is the "gay" area of Atlanta and therefore is very nice and has many great places to eat My wife and I drop the kids at my parents and stay in Midtown occasionally the Four Seasons is great but $$$

as a rule, Days Inns are never good options, ever

If I were you I would stay on Marta somewhere as others have said. The Dome is the one place in Atlanta that it is actually better to use Marta than drive. So look Midtown or north and ask about distance to Marta or if the hotel has a shuttle

The nice thing is that Atlanta has tons of hotel space so you don't really have to worry about getting your reservations in early before the hotels all fill up.

If it was me I would stay downtown area close to the dome and walk or take a cab. Downtown is'nt a bad place when events are going on. Do not stay in Buckhead. It is just as espensive and seems to be turning bad. I'd feel safer downtown more than Buckhead. I live in Douglasville and I will probably get a room downtown that night to keep from driving home after we celebrate our first win of the season with my fellow tiders.....

Staying downtown near the Georgia Dome is your best bet. Not only do you have convenient access to the game but you and your family can also enjoy the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, World of Coca Cola and Centenniel Olympic Park nearby without having to drive and park your car which can really be a hassle in Atlanta traffic - especially in August heat. If your budget is tight, then the Days Inn is the way to go. If you can afford to splurge a little then the Ellis is a very affordable upscale hotel near everything. And if you can afford to splurge a lot then you have several choices: Ritz, Hilton, Sheraton, Embassy Suites, Omni, Westin Peachtree Center, etc.

Many downtown hotels fill up for conventions and other major events well in advance. Take a look at Expedia for the weekend of August 29/30 and you'll see that many downtown hotels are already full during that weekend.
