Joe Namath, I've never seen a player walk on the field and lift a team like he could.
Very True

1. Joe Namath
2. Snake Stabler
3. Leroy Jordan ("If he stays in bounds, Leroy will git him." CPBB)
4. John Hannah... None better at his position
5. Ozzie Newsome... best hands of all time or (Don Hutson?)

You are probaly right about Joe Namath. But I cannot remember seeing him. I was born in 1967, so I have just seen video. But to say that Joe Namath is not the best would be like saying something about the BEAR not being the best. Reality is: Joe probably is the best.

I remember Joe Namath's pro career, but my Tide-o-meter really only became activated with the 66 team. Thus, Stabler's the first great one I recall while he was wearing Crimson.

Others contending for my list:
--Ozzie
--John Hannah
--the original Italian stallion, Johnny Musso
--Steadman was, to me, the best option QB to watch, and Major O. was much fun to see as well (first player to score a TD in 4 consecutive bowl games--has anyone done that since?)
--FB Billy Jackson was guaranteed to get a few yards with every touch
--E.J. Junior (I was on campus for the end of his career; I recall him defending all three options of a triple option once. Against KY, but still a mighty impressive feat)
--Saw both Cornelius and Derrick--awesome!
--Chris Samuels blocking was pretty amazing. #2 pick in the NFL draft as I recall...
--Palmer was something to see.

But prolly the single most eye-popping play ever was Linnie Patrick's run in the Iron Bowl in which he got hit by every player on Auburn's roster + several dozen of their students, and refused to go down. (OK, I embellish, but only a bit...) I recall Coach Bryant saying something like this on the show "I wish I knew how to reach that young man..."

My first BAMA hero was Harry Gilmer, but I only got glimpses of him on the Saturday newsreels at the movie theater, so I'm going with Lee Roy Jordan. John Hannah and Dwight Stephenson are right up there too.

Best is impossible to say, but Lane Bearden is my all time fav - that guy exemplified the heart and toughness that I respect and love about Bama football.

David Palmer is the best football player that I've seen . OL , TE , DL & LB are the only positions he couldn't play . We never saw it in any games but , he did practice some as a DB just in case he were ever needed . Coach Stallings felt he could have been a star corner had that been the chosen route .

Biscuit was great and was already very well built when he arrived in TitleTown but IMO , DT was a cut above by the time he was finished at the Capstone . I believe DT is the best defensive player who has ever been on campus . I know that's a bold statement and admittedly our statisticians were quite liberal during his time but by the #'s , Bennett really isn't even that close to DT . I think people are clouded to some degree by their memories of "The Sack" . JOMO :D

Linnie Patrick-everytime he touched the ball he gained 3-5 yards if not 20.
David Palmer-well documented what he could do-Won the Ole Miss game and kept us from getting beat by Tn all by himself
Shaun Alexander-great runner
Lane Bearden-only one good leg and still made more than his share of tackles on SP.
Chris Samuel-he has some gaudy stat about not allowing a sack his entire Sr year or something close to this.

DT without doubt with Biscuit a close second.

I'd have to say the deuce on offense. The other team knew he was going to get the ball but still could not stop him. Yes, pure magic.

I only started watching Bama in 1980 so my selection is limited to who I have seen.

LeRoy Jordan and Derrick Thomas. Both just happen to be LBers. I was blessed to have seen both.

At the ripe old age of 7 I can remember my Dad and Uncle telling me watch #55, he is the best player in college football. I did and I am thankful I had that opportunity. Years later I saw Derrick Thomas another #55 who was every bit as good or better than Lee Roy Jordan. Both wore #55 and I honestly can not remember any two players who quite caught my attention the way those two did. ROLL TIDE ROLL 1962/1988.

Recently? Protho. Impossible to accurately describe the feeling of anticipation every time he caught a pass! And he seemed to always be
'in a zone' on field and having fun.

Past via video and DVD.....start with 1961 and go forward!

Tide players turned Pro....(I saw them with the Pros versus @ Alabama) Starr, Namath (although I didn't like his 'swagger' @ the time), Jordon, Thomas, Newsome, and Snake.

I dislike this type question for as soon as I post I remember another great one!

In my opinion John Hannah was the best football player ever to step foot on campus. To be the best a player had to dominate from the time he arrives, until the time he leaves, and there was no other player to do that but Hannah.Like a rock he was.

I stand corrected. Thanks. My age is almost as old as Lee Roy's number. He wore #55 with Dallas and Thomas was #58 with KC. I will get it straight.
No problem, I can remember things like Lee Roy's # but cannot remember what I did this morning. You are correct however, Lee Roy was #55 for the Cowboys as Chuck Howley already had #54 when Lee Roy got to Dallas.

I'm going to vote ... based strictly on heart and guts alone .. for Lane Bearden. Dude was booming punts with a shredded knee. That's enough to make a grown man pee his pants just thinking about it.
