Speaking of Nike...

I just finished watching "Without Limits", starring Billy Cruddup, who played distance running star Steve Prefontaine.

Late in the movie, his coach at the University of Oregon, Bill Bowerman, gets Prefontaine to try on a pair of shoes he(Bowerman) invents in 1975. He coined it the "Nike" after the Greek goddess of victory.

Hence, that's why the Oregon Ducks have always used Nike from it's inception.

I just thought that was some neat trivia.

Definitely one of my favorite movies and that would also go for just about any runner out there like me. Yes, Nike did start with Bowerman and Pre was their first client. But it was Knight that made the company grow to where it is now.

Perkins was not making a fashion statement with the white helmet routine. He believed that when we played teams with dark helmets it was easier for our quarterbacks to find their receivers if they wore white. I am not saying this is true, that's just what he said. If we played a team with white helmets, we used the crimson.

I'm not arguing with you that he actually said that, but we did wear the white helmets under Perkins at least once when playing teams that did not have dark colored helmets. I remember attending the 1983 Alabama v. LSU game in Tiger Stadium, and we wore white helmets then. LSU, of course, was wearing their usual gold helmets, which is far from a dark color. That game was on ABC, if I remember correctly, and you could probably get the film from Simon Bott.

The teams we often wore it against -- MSU and Vandy come to mind -- generally had darker colored helmets (Vandy had a black helmet at the time), but that wasn't always the case.

The white helmet actually has a pretty interesting history. Most people do not remember this, but at times in the early 1960's Bryant actually used the white helmet for kicking specialists while the rest of the team wore the usual crimson helmets. And, another forgotten fact, we actually wore white helmets in 1969 with the 100th anniversary of college football design.

Well, I've been on a sabbatical since last October from running because of tendonitis that I got in both of my knees, it ended my college running career with UA. I do want to run a marathon in a couple years and think I can break 3 hours based on the kind of mileage and times I was doing before I got hurt.

10 miles is fine as long as the weather cools down and I've gotten back into shape haha.

We wore white on the road, unless the home team, such as Penn State, wore white helmets themselves. We wore white at home twice during the '83 season, against Mississippi State and Southern Miss. Southern Miss wore black, but the team voted to wear the white helmets for that game.

We only wore the white ones in '69 against VPI.

Me and the head coach of our cross country team took about six of our boys to FSU's camp. The first night there, me and one of their runners on FSU's team went running through campus. We passed underneath Pensacola Street onto a trail that ran behind some apartments. He told me that's where Ted Bundy abducted those girls in the '80's. Kind of creepy to be running there at night.

Tendonitis is tough. I had it back in March. Not fun stuff.

I really wouldn't complain much if the face masks changed to white, shoes changed to white, socks changed and jerseys returned to crimson.

White face mask would be nice, and a crimson jersey again.

I kinda liked the old mesh type jerseys too. It looked rugged.

And a white A representing Alabama would be nice, But i know some folks will get upset. I think the schools logo should be represented.

Iowa State has completely revamped their uniforms, helmets, and everything. Here is a photo of the old ones:

Those new ones look great.
