Question: ESPN Gameplan?

I lived in L.A. the last few years and ESPN GP was well worth every penny. Probably got 4-5 Bama games a year I wouldn't have otherwise received (because of them carrying LF games). Not to mention the other southeast games that I wouldn't have seen living on the west coast. I'm back in ATL now though, and trying to decide whether to sign up for the Dish Network HD-only package, which doesn't allow you to do GP. How much will I miss by not having GP? I don't remember it being a huge deal when I lived here before, but after being out in California, it's hard to imagine actually not needing it.

What will I likely miss? Just the 2-3 PPV games like homecoming, etc? (Probably Tulane, W.K., Ark. St.?)

Also, if I went with Comcast so I could still get GP, does anyone know if they still let you buy each Saturday ala carte for $20 or so? I doubt those three games would be worth $120 to me for the whole season.

Thanks!

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

You can see the games in certain bars, like Smith's Olde Bar at Monroe and Piedmont. Always an option.

Also, I think Comcast still lets you buy the games individually for about 20 bucks. Pretty reliable but there are sometimes problems. It may have changed though.

in my opinion, gameplan is still worthwhile. Even without our games. I know that most weekends I would still prefer to catch Texas vrs some regional strong opponent on one of the GP Channels rather than Georgia tech vs Wake Forrest on the local channel. There is always a game onn GP worth watching that will not be seen locally. For our games you will get 2-3 that way. I would be willing to bet you can do a la carte with GP games on Dish (I know I have in the past though I do have HD and all of the other channels on Dish) so no need to go to comcast at all. If you do GP early its usually $99 for the early bird special, I have it on auto-renew every year

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

It's worth it as long as the goobs in the Comcast office in Atlanta don't say the game is blacked out and not show it (like the Houston game last year) when the blackout map showed only Alabama and Texas as being blacked out. Still ticked about that one. :mad2:

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

Get it only if you plan on watching other teams besides Bama. Bama is usually on except for games against La.- Monroe and you can get those on an individual basis.

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

It's a must have for college football fanatics. I usually have two tv's going during football season and have found value in the gameplan package usually every week, regardless of Alabama playing or not.

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

One thing that has always irritated me about ESPN Gameplan is that they schedule back-to-back games on the same channel but only give a three-hour increment for the first game. When this happens, if the game you want to see is coming up next, you're likely to miss the first quarter or more. Very frustrating.

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

i use it only once a year. i used it last year for the Houston game, and i have directv so i am never blacked out of any games.

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

There is a lot of football on a Saturday without GamePlan. Hard to even manage watching it all.

I've had it two out of the last three years and hardly used it. I don't think I watched three quarters of football on GamePlan all last season. Best to just buy an individual game or two if you need to, otherwise catch a better game on the other networks.

The wife added the cable tier with the Big Ten Network so now I have to work in a three hour nap every Saturday, too. ;)

Heck, you're in ATL now, only 3 1/2 hours from campus - turn off the TV and come to Tuscaloosa for the games!!

Seriously - we live in ATL and switched from Dish to Comcast a while ago and quite happy. Their customer service is literally THE WORST but their product is really darn good.

Every game we've wanted to see on TV has been available from Comcast one way or another.

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

Get Comcast

1. You get CSS (I think they may have changed names) and they show replays of all the SEC games during the week. Bama games were on Sunday last year.

2. Get the season long Gameplan. There are always games that don't come throught that should and when you find one call Comcast and complain. They will refund you the individual weekend rate. I did this twice last year ($50-something in credits). One for a Florida game that came on early and for one other game. It ended up being pretty cheap for the season and I enjoyed watching some of the west coast games later at night.

I would definitely do GamePlan. I have DirecTV and it worked great. If Bama has a great season and most of the games are picked up by the networks, then you get to watch other teams.

That's because you are like me, we both like west coast teams also. I also will have two t.v.s going atleast.

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

Do they send you a weekly e-mail that shows what games are at what times on which channel? Or do you just go to the Gameplan block of channels on your program guide to see what's up?

I just swapped to DirecTV this Feb., so I'm new to all of this fancy Gameplan stuff.:)

no idea if they do that (Dish Doesn't) but you can go here http://www.lsufootball.net/tvschedule.htm (Ignore the purple and gold) and they will have it all up and updated constantly, including links to blackout maps. Best CF TV Schedule I have found on the net

id say its worth it, ive called family in alabama and they'd be watching the bama game and here id only have the acc game off the local channels. spend the money:biggrin:

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not worried about the cost, I've had it the last two years while living out west and it was worth every penny. The problem is that I'd been planning to get the Dish HD-only plan instead of Comcast since I almost never watch anything that's not on one of their HD stations. The entire package of 50+ HD channels (which includes ESPN, ESPN2, etc.) is only $30/month, with no additional fees. This absolutely blows away what Comcast costs me when you factor in their regular (post-promotional period) rate, the extra cost to get HD, etc. The ONLY problem is that Dish literally will not let you get GP if you have the HD-only package. Not the full season. Not the individual weekends. So I either have to forego all GP options and do the local bars thing for those games, or I have to be willing to spend an extra $300+ for the year for a bunch of Comcast channels that I don't ever watch.

If I only have to go out of my way for 1-2 low profile games, I can live with that. If there's the possibility that I'm going to miss 4-5 games by not having access to GP, that's a little more worrisome.

Just switched to DirecTV...

I just switched over to Directv last week from Charter. I've had gameplan the last few years but last season did it for me w/ Charter after they blacked out a couple of PPV Bama games we should have been getting with gameplan.

I have the complete 6,000 channel lineup w/ Directv ;) Including all the FSN sports channels, Big10/11 network, etc. My question is, with this will those west coast games be blacked out on FSN networks and thus I need to get gameplan for those, or will I get those games on FSN and only be missing out on the 3 low-end bama games this year?

Re: ESPN Gameplan worth it since I've moved to ATL?

Are the LF games going to be broadcasted on yahoo sports like last year? I saw Vandy, Ole Miss, and Tennessee on line last year.
