BREAKING Stanford GM Andrew Luck fires coach Troy Taylor

Interesting on several fronts.

First, at Stanford, the head football coach apparently reports to the GM, not the other way around. I know DeBoer doesn't report to Courtney Morgan.

Second, the timing. I wonder what changed between the end of the football season (when candidates would have been far more plentiful) and now?

Third, mention of "investigations in previous years related to Coach Taylor." Guessing that's the stuff in the ESPN article -- basically being a jerk to women and compliance staff. But that would have been known to Luck some time ago. Which brings us back around to #2 -- why make the move now?

Regardless of why, he apparently felt so strongly about it that he's willing to consider an interim solution for most of an offseason and an entire regular season.

Fourth, whenever he decides to fill the opening, you have to wonder who candidates will be. Guessing Grubb's name will at least be on the list.

Lots of questions, not many answers.

In the article it mentions at one point during the investigation Luck gave his full support to Coach Taylor but ultimately did a 180 and said he needed to go. It sounds like more information came to light through the investigation that made Luck realize this guy may not be the best fit and the change needed to be made "immediately". I betcha more information came out that Luck simply couldn't ignore.

Stanford football going for that late dot-matrix printer era vibe.

Also...just say "we've decided to make a change." Period. We wish him well. Moving on. It is either because of information from investigations or not. Might as well have just said "I only just got around to actually looking at this."

THis seems like a "Mike Price" kinda time to be looking for a new football coach. Sub-optimal, to say the least.

You don’t fire a guy in March unless you have a good reason beyond he just sucks as a coach. They went 3-9 in both of his seasons although he had been very successful at the FCS level. So something came up.

I’m sure they will find someone although it won’t be easy as it isn’t an easy place to win. Playing half of your conference games on the East coast can’t be easy for a school on the Pacific Ocean.

But it’s not my problem or my concern unless they pluck from our staff.

I remember EXACTLY where I was and who I was with and where we were going.
Same. I was actually living in Pensacola when that story broke and since a buddy of mine had his bachelor party at that club, I was a little familiar with the place. (In fact, while we were partying, I was offered a job as a bouncer there.) It's not up there with the Kennedy assassination, but for BAMA fans like me who were surrounded by Gators and Noles, it was close.

from August 1997 to January 2006, I think I saw a total of 20 games and of those 20, most were not full games. A rigorous architecture school plus working had its advantages. It saved me from watching those nightmare years.

Edit: Now that I think about it I missed a lot of games during the 2006 season because I was dating a chick that hated sports of any kind. What the hell was I thinking?

It worked out for us. If Price doesn’t get fired he might have done too well to get fired in 2006 and we never get Saban. The butterfly effect can set you down a path you don’t want to think about. I sometimes wonder if Bo Rein’s plane doesn’t vanish how that changes their trajectory and Saban is never in the SEC and doesn’t want to come here.

I agree. That is why I think whatever information came out after Luck's public backing of Taylor must have been pretty bad to make the move when he did.
It was my first thought as well when the news broke yesterday. The “why now”? Otherwise, you “Slap a bandage on it”, get through the season and handle it at the end of the season.

The ESPN article did seem to allude to a situation where Taylor’s aggressiveness was not limited to female staff and female colleagues. He may have slapped the face that was attached to rear end he should have been kissing, and that was enough for Luck to say “good bye”?
