Hooterville, Vir.
A friend of mine, had a 12 year old daughter. She was an only child and the apple of daddy's eye.
The daughter was out riding around on an ATV with a friend. She was not driving.
The driver rolled the ATV over. The driver was thrown clear. The ATV crushed the daughter who died on the scene.
This guy is disconsolate (as you can imagine).

What this brought to mind was two thoughts:
1. Hug those you love and tell them you love them. You never know how much time you will get with them.
2. ATVs are dangerous and parents are correct to warn young people about riding them. A parent is not being an "old granny" or a worry wart by refusing permission to ride one, or insisting that the riding be done in the parents presence so the parents can tell them to slow down or not ride on the side of a slope. Young people cannot adequately assess danger.

This is awful and I’m sorry that your friend will have to endure such pain from a tragedy like this.

I was an only child too and ATV accidents like this is exactly why my Mom never allowed me to ride one in my childhood.

My Mom never would have been normal or sane again if something happened to me back then… She was really over protective too.

So I hope your friend has a close circle of friends and family to watch over him and help him through this.

Just unbelievably heartbreaking and again I’m sorry this happened.

ATV's can be very dangerous and the list is too long with people who've lost their lives on one. I hate it for that family and I can only imagine what they're going through. What a tragedy.

I probably should have died several times on ATV's when I was young. I rode them most of my life and did some stupid things on them that could have easily turned out tragic.

sorry for your friend's loss. i can't fathom that.

when my brother was in middle school he rolled over a 3-wheeler and broke his femur. he spent 6 weeks in traction at children's

There’s a wealthy family in Tuscaloosa whose scion (a few years younger than me) tried to ride a three-wheeler up the support cable of a utility pole when he was an early or even pre-teen in the early 70s. He’s been a quadriplegic for over 50 years.

I think three-wheelers were outlawed for their inherent instability. In this case, family money meant that post-injury care wasn’t a problem. But no amount of money can fix a 13-year-old’s damaged spinal cord.

The way early teens and younger are allowed to drive golf carts lately, expect a bunch of tragedies soon.

And yes, this sort of story makes me think of all the godamighty stoopid things I did between 12 and 25. There but for the grace of God go I.

and e-bikes/e-scooters

These stories are the most terrifying for parents. The thought of losing my daughter would be crushing beyond all tolerance. I am so heartbroken for your friend, @Tidewater. A couple of weeks ago, the three-year-old son of a colleague of my wife drowned. Just no words ...

There is an issue with e-bikes in my neighborhood. Kids way too young are not supervised on vehicles that go way too fast. I nearly squashed a kid (maybe 10 y.o.) last weekend. He was coming off a sidewalk (not supposed to be there on a bike) and cut right in front of me like he never saw me. I had to slam to a stop. If I had been going a little faster or been casual in my attention, it would have been over. He stayed oblivious to the whole incident and kept going. Kid is on track to have a short life. 😠
