Auburn: We have never beaten Auburn in JH when they enter the game with 8+ wins

OK, I’m just trying for clarification, today was a monumental upset, right? Or has that position suddenly been abandoned?

The Tide are 13.5-point favorites in the latest Alabama vs. Florida State odds,

As an attorney friend once told me the first thing they teach you in law school is the best answer to any question is “it depends….”.

If Bama suddenly wakes up, runs the table (ain’t happening) and Norvell and FSU wallow in mediocrity the rest of the season, then maybe. If you reverse it, then it probably isn’t. Take for example 1975 Alabama’s opening season loss to Missouri. It was about as ugly as this one yesterday. Considered a huge upset. As the season played out, it turned out that it was. Why? Alabama ran the table and Missouri floundered to 6-5. Similarly in 1971 was Alabama’s victory over a “heavily favored” USC team in the opener an upset? Probably not as Alabama went on to win the conference while USC ended the season at 6-4-1.

You can argue the nature of a win or loss late in the season like Alabama-Auburn in 1972 as being “monumental” because you have a body of work for both teams. Season opening “upsets” are only based on perception.

Based on betting, yes it was a huge upset (won’t say monumental). But in reality was it?
Ask again me after Thanksgiving….

I am far more interested in beating Tennessee. Auburn, to me, is just another opponent on the schedule on the way to the SEC Championship Game and the National Title/BCS/CFP game(s).*

*None of which we will make this season.

I'm far more interested in LA Monroe. After yesterday, we really shouldn't take any game for granted.

Was Auburn beating Alabama in the 1972 Iron Bowl an UPSET?
Without question.

But it wasn't - and no, I didn't "have to be there" - proof of "throw out the records" and the other cliches we hear during every year's IB hype.

An upset, yes. "Auburn didn't even belong on the field with Alabama?" No. (I understand why Alabama fans of the time who had watched the Tide install the wishbone and go 21-1 would think so, but that's just an Alabama thing, not a reality based one).

Right now, this is more in line with the 2000 UCLA game.

And while the Bruins started that year great, well, they wound up 6-6 themselves.
