In the end, I think you are correct.
Why was Maduro at the head of the Venezuelan government? Because the Venezuelans let that happen and Maduro fits their culture.
If we have not chanaged that culture, we will eventually get the same result: another Maduro look-alike.

Supposedly, there IS that whole narco-terrorist angle. Plus geopolitics. Also, aren’t we supposed to be the champions of democracy? I seem to remember hearing that stupid phrase “threat to democracy” a whole lot last year (and for reasons as moronic as they sound.) Seems to me that eliminating voter fraud in Venezuela would promote those ideals.

Honestly, I think Trump's move here has more to do with geopolitics than with enforcing drug policy.
Russians have been running around Venezuela for a while and Chinese accessing Venezuelan oil was too much for Trump to accept. Drug stuff provided a convenient excuse.

he's doing it because he wants to. nothing more, nothing less. there are a lot of people who put a lot of effort into putting lipstick on it, but he thinks he owns the country and can do whatever he wants with it, and there are a significant number of folks who are willing to let him do/think that.

As with most what Trump does, I dont agree with the methods he uses.

But i do agree it's way past time to deal with the governments harboring drug cartels. And their existence in power needs to be seriously threatened.

If we could deal with cartels in South and Central America, I think we will see alot of improvements domestically.

I will go on record and say that I would like to see Cuba democratic and open to travel and investment. I think it helps with illegal immigration.

Now that we’re in this situation, I hope that Trump has a real plan that works for Venezuela. My dislike for him doesn’t extend to hoping everything he touches fails. If you go to the 3:30 mark of this video from his first term, he discusses one aspect this. How out of whack things are with Putin getting energy from one of the European NATO countries - which by the way is not paying into the NATO defense fund at the same % as the US.
