US launches strikes against Venezuela, captures Maduro

The Pottery Barn rule of diplomacy...I really do not know what to think here...my initial reaction is "what has DJT wrought now?" I am waiting to see how this plays out, however.

Why doesn't he capture Putin and his wife and end the Ukrainian War? Oh, that's right, Russia can fight back...
And they have nukes.

one despot replaced with another one. rinse and repeat
In the end, I think you are correct.
Why was Maduro at the head of the Venezuelan government? Because the Venezuelans let that happen and Maduro fits their culture.
If we have not chanaged that culture, we will eventually get the same result: another Maduro look-alike.

It would be nice if there were some degree of separation between the Russian and Chinese motives and ours.
Supposedly, there IS that whole narco-terrorist angle. Plus geopolitics. Also, aren’t we supposed to be the champions of democracy? I seem to remember hearing that stupid phrase “threat to democracy” a whole lot last year (and for reasons as moronic as they sound.) Seems to me that eliminating voter fraud in Venezuela would promote those ideals.

Honestly, I think Trump's move here has more to do with geopolitics than with enforcing drug policy.
Russians have been running around Venezuela for a while and Chinese accessing Venezuelan oil was too much for Trump to accept. Drug stuff provided a convenient excuse.

I have to agree. I mean, hell, it’s not like we’ve gone after the Mexican cartels and they are closer.

At the end of the day, I am team US and not team red, or team blue. If this was some geopolitical strategy, fine, but I still have my doubts because the orange man is in charge. I really don't trust anything he does is going to come out great for us.

he's doing it because he wants to. nothing more, nothing less. there are a lot of people who put a lot of effort into putting lipstick on it, but he thinks he owns the country and can do whatever he wants with it, and there are a significant number of folks who are willing to let him do/think that.

As with most what Trump does, I dont agree with the methods he uses.

But i do agree it's way past time to deal with the governments harboring drug cartels. And their existence in power needs to be seriously threatened.

If we could deal with cartels in South and Central America, I think we will see alot of improvements domestically.

I will go on record and say that I would like to see Cuba democratic and open to travel and investment. I think it helps with illegal immigration.

Now Trump says he may go after Delcy Rodriguez if she doesn’t comply, bend to the U.S. whims. I find this funny because just yesterday he brought her up as a replacement for Maduro. Now he is discovering she is her own woman, he says she may suffer a fate worse than Maduro’s.

Hey, I’m just responding to the guy you quoted.

Now that we’re in this situation, I hope that Trump has a real plan that works for Venezuela. My dislike for him doesn’t extend to hoping everything he touches fails. Yeah, I’d like to see America as a “champion of democracy,” but there’s been little evidence of that recently. A change would be refreshing.

his failures are not a function of your hope. they are an integral part of who he is

I've never known an American president who fully understood the geopolitical significance of energy as much as this one does.

Most politicians consider energy/oil just to be another commodity. Something to buy and sell.

If you go to the 3:30 mark of this video from his first term, he discusses one aspect this. How out of whack things are with Putin getting energy from one of the European NATO countries - which by the way is not paying into the NATO defense fund at the same % as the US.

And this was before Putin invaded Ukraine - and Trump was pointing something out that just seemed to be oblivious to others before him

Putin is not and was not getting oil from anybody. Russia is an oil exporting country.

Yet he said within his first 100 days the Ukrainian war would be over…

Anyone that says that they are the only person than can do something is either a crazy person or a narcissist.
