Lou Holtz has entered hospice care

He was the biggest ND homer in the history of homerism, but dammit, I liked him anyway. He was an unbelievable motivator. This makes me sad.
One thing to remember with hospice care: it doesn’t necessarily mean that “death is imminent”. Basically hospice is now “comfort care”, in other words no extraordinary means will be undertaken to extend life. Hospice care can be a matter of days, weeks, or even years. Former President Carter was actually in hospice care for, I believe, almost 3 years.
We are currently considering hospice for my 92 year old old mother in law. She is moving towards the end with dementia, and has been wheelchair bound for almost seven years. It is about allowing a person to leave this world in dignified manner..

He was on Johnny Carson's show while coaching at Arkansas and said "Fayetteville was about three hours from Little Rock... by telephone."

Sure do miss the old College Football Final with him, Mark May and Rece.

I lived in Charleston when Holtz took over an absolutely moribund South Carolina program and suffered through a winless first season before turning them around to a place where Spurrier would actually succeed him. That said, my favorite Holtz memories were 1. being in Legion Field for The Hit back in '86 and 2. seeing him on the verge of tears after Bama skull-dragged his beloved ND in the 2013 BCSNC game.
Many folks aren’t old enough to remember when Holtz left N.C. State to coach the NY Jets in 1976. He resigned with one game left in the season after winning only 3 games. He said something like “God didn’t put him on this earth to coach pro football”. 
I think he was pretty open to saying it was the biggest mistake he ever made in his coaching career.,
I remember vividly taking his Arkansas team to the Orange Bowl in 1978. Holtz had suspended three of his players, two of which were starters. Switzer and Oklahoma were huge favorites. Arkansas absolutely dog walked them 38-6.

I don't think we knew how good we had it when we had Rece, Mark and Lou on CFF! At times it was silly when they did the trial with Rece as judge and Mark and Coach taking opposing sides, but it was very entertaining looking back.
CLH was an amazing motivational speaker. It's ironic, considering his speech impediment, but I heard him speak at a fundraiser one time, and it was one of the best I've ever heard (and I've heard a lot of them over the years!).

In the lead up to the '79/'80 Sugar Bowl he commented Bama's Cheerleaders were bigger than Arky's offensive line!
We had him as a keynote speaker for a benefit dinner for a Bible college in Florence, AL a couple years ago. He was a class act and so easy to work with at that event.
I recall when asked what he learned from the game and Coach Bryant he said "To recruit bigger faster players"
