As Iran protesters face ruthless crackdown, Trump says help 'on its way' (report from PBS)

It would appear that the Iranian protests have been thoroughly crushed with many thousands of deaths. I am not suprised given the ruthlessness of the Iranian government.

It’s exactly why toppling the government behind American military might is one of the dumbest moves we could ever do. If protests are easily put down then it proves there are no ideas in Iran of what comes after the regime is toppled. It ultimately means that the US would be the ones deciding the future of the country…. And that is not a good thing.

Agreed. While tempting... It would be Iraq 2.0 and who knows what bad actors would almost certainly arise from the ashes. You can't take a country as dysfunctional as Iran with a religious dictatorship and expect anything close to a democratic transition.

The funny thing is that the US and British destroyed a semi democratic government in Iran because they were taking charge of their own oil prices, and then put in a monarchy loyal to the West. The Shah and the US meddling in Iranian politics eventually led to the current regime. Had we did nothing and never backed Reza over fears of communist expansion and oil prices then the ayatollah never becomes nothing more than a crazy religious man from the mountains. The US practically made Iran choose between two horrible choices and they chose the Ayatollah solely on the fact that he wasn’t the US’s guy.

I think Iran would be 1000x times worse than Iraq. It’s far more complicated and far more of a power struggle.

The U.S. is on the brink of a major war with Iran — Axios reports: A wave of attacks is expected, targeting thousands of objectives, including military and political sites, as well as targeted eliminations. The U.S. has already concentrated about a third of its active naval forces in the Middle East. This includes hundreds of fighter jets, two aircraft carriers, and more than 150 cargo flights carrying weapons. In just one day, around 50 F-35, F-22, and F-16 fighter jets were deployed to the region. There are also about 33 ships in the area, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines with Tomahawk missiles. An operation against Iran could become the largest and most powerful in modern history.

Again I ask... To what end? If replacing the regime is the goal then you better have a plan in place to deal with the enormous power vacuum that you are about to unleash if you are successful and the fact that you are about to prove the regime right if you cant.

This more seems like a case of "I did it in Venezuela and didnt get bit so I can do it anywhere that doesnt have the capabilities to fight back" logic. However, I fear that this will go down as one of the most moronic things we have ever done next to invade Afghanistan in our modern history. I would like to be proven wrong but I only think this is another this is just another "I got to compare myself to a great president" ego move.

I am reminded again by one military comment I read recently. We have already seen Iranian missles make it through Israel's Iron Dome and US off shore defenses and do significant damage. We have thousands of American's setting as targets off the coast. All it would take is a couple of hypersonic missiles to make it through the Navy's defense perimeter and Washington would have a disaster to deal with!

Speaking of Trump... I am given to believe that Putin has offered a huge personal deal to Trump to push for the Putin proposal in Ukraine. It is beyond disgraceful!

I don't think Trump knows or cares. He has never thought about the consequences of anything, just the here and now, and right now, he needs headlines to change.
To be fair, this is the one area where Trump is literally no different than any other president in the last fifty-plus years…

US foreign policy has largely been disastrous (based on cultural ignorance) since the 1960’s.

Does a protracted engagement with Iran give Trump some cover or platform to suspend mid-termconcerned. And possibly 2028? That is the question we need to be asking ourselves. Steve Bannon has recently confirmed in an interview that Trump will serve a 3rd term. I dont believe these people are blowing smoke. Their whole movement is predicated on the populace believing they are blowing smoke. Trump has seen Zelensky maintain his power because of the war with Russia. I am very concerned.

The Ukrainian constitution prohibits elections during martial law, which has been in effect since Russia's invasion.

They might try it here, but I expect the response would (rightfully) be unlike anything we've ever seen in US history.

True, but we haven't seen a lot before of what we are experiencing now...
