Archie Manning has to be up there for me. The guy was Ole Miss football during his time in Oxford. Not a pretentious bone in his body. And he took a beating as a duel threat QB. Played a couple of games with a broken left forearm or wrist if I remember correctly.

Also, just before his junior year, Archie’s father took his own life. I believe his father’s health was declining and the family was facing serious financial issues. Archie came close to leaving school but his mother convinced him to stay the course.

Archie was a great player. But I admire his character and resiliency much more.
