Leave it to Plant quarterback Phillip Ely to continue to surprise, even off the football field. The talented senior quarterback appeared to be down to Clemson, Wake Forest, LSU, and Ole Miss. However, Ely pulled off the huge surprise when he announced he would be attending the University of Alabama. He made the news official at a 5:00 PM press conference at Plant High School. Ely went into detail about his surprise pick. Quarterback Phillip Ely is a two time State Champion and has his eyes focused on a history setting third straight title, an accomplishment neither of his predecessors in Aaron Murray or Robert Marve could accomplish in their time at Plant High school. Ely, who threw for 1,860 yards and 20 touchdowns, goes from one champion to another after picking the Crimson Tide. He is excited for the opportunity to play for a living legend in Alabama head coach Nick Saban. From the very start of his recruitment, Ely made it clear that the combination of football and academics was going to ultimately decide his final choice and according to Ely, Alabama certainly fits that big void with the Crimson Tide being one of the top football programs in American and offering plenty of options in the academic field as well. Clearly for any quarterback, getting in the right system is essential and with the fact that the quarterback position should be wide open with the departure of quarterback Craig McElroy next season. The opportunity at Alabama for Ely was certainly an attractive option. The biggest question was how hard it was for Ely to keep it a secret that not only did the Crimson Tide offered, but his impressions of the program as a whole. For weeks, and even months, he was dead silent...not even mentioning Alabama inside the top five schools he's considering. Relationships are essential and as Ely covered earlier, the bond he immediately struck with head coach Nick Saban was a key part of the decision. But also helping the Crimson Tide's chances was the connection Ely hit up with the rest of the Alabama staff. For any prospect thinking about a college choice goals are immediately set after making that decision and Ely fully realizes in joining a top program such as the Crimson Tide the expectations or goals he's set will also be raised considerably
