I just read on another board that he is suppose to commit to someone tommorow and many are saying to UA, but he does not have an offer that I know of. I know we originally wanted a QB in this class but figure the ones we did offer early that have since commited elsewhere would just now wait until 2012 class and go after 2. I thought he was going to commit to LSU and if not Clemson. Unless he brings his team mate with him J Wilder I can not see us adding him to the class but I could be wrong. Anyone else heard anything regarding him?

I read TigerDroppings and VolNation for fun, and yesterday there was a long thread on the LSU recruiting page, now deleted, addressing Ely's announcement this afternoon. The LSU faithful were up in arms at the news that Ely had apparently elected to go with the Tide because he had established a relationship with Coach Saban at camp this summer. Like you, I thought he was an LSU lock, and that the general feeling was that we might not sign a quarterback this year. If he has an offer it must have been kept under the strictest of wraps. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I don't see it...but I am not CNS or anyone else at Bama. I think the fact that B. Sims is working at QB some...even though he is projected to play safety for us...is a decent indication that though we only technically have 3 QB's on scholarship, we can move a 4th guy over if need be. Since a recruit wouldn't even be able to play until 2011 I assume that Saban et al feel good about their chances of landing a blue chip QB.

Rumor started on one board yesterday and has spread somewhat. Grain of salt stage currently.

There is alot of smoke out there. Could just be the internet rumor mill working at full speed, who knows. At any rate, I guess we'll find out for sure around 4 pm CST.

One of the posters on Tiger Forum's recruiting board accused Coach Saban of going after Ely just to keep LSU from signing him. Also, as soon as this became a rumor, Stephen Rivers mystically became a far superior QB to Ely, "after all his brother is an NFL quarterback."

It is a sort of perverse fun to read those posts. You would think an LSU fan familiar with CNS would understand that with fewer spots to fill in the 2011 class, it would be the height of absurdity to waste an offer simply to stump a conference rival.

Even if Ely was not on our radar screens until now, it makes sense to sign at least one quarterback every year for depth's sake. In CNS I trust.

I see where one site is already saying he will announce at 5. Looks pretty bogus the way it is written up though.

finebaum just said he's comitted to us
He's probably using the same information from the rivals site I saw.

Has he kept his offer silent or something? I don't get why a kid would commit without an offer. I just checked, and CS doesn't even have him listed as a prospect.

Watched some film on the kid. He obviously has great tools. Wherever he winds up going, hopefully he won't be pressed into duty early. Like most kids making the transition from high school to college, he needs to bulk up a little bit.

I had to go read that at Tiger Forums. a five page thread, and one person that hardly ever posts did say that "It seems like Bama offered just to keep us from getting him today", but that's silly. I do agree that a team should take a QB every year. Look back and see what happened when LSU didn't...and then the great Perrilloux had to go. Not a good thing to have a gap like LSU did.

It's the internet, so we'll see. From everything I've heard, if UF or ND ever offer, he's theirs anyway...so we'll see. But why wouldn't he accept a Bama offer if he actually did get one?

If Phillip Ely commits to Bama today it would be a shock to me that he even has an offer from Bama, much less a comittable one. I know that the rumor appears to have started by a poster on Rivals with some sort of copy and paste of a article without a valid link saying that Ely is going to commit to Bama today. I can not find anything credible to substantiate that post or indicate that the info is true at this time.

Ely does not even list Bama among his schools of interest or among his favorites on both Rivals.com and Scout.com. Most people think that he is going to commit to either LSU or Clemson. If somehow he does choose Bama, then CNS must have recently offered Ely and went after him very hard. I don't see how that info could have remained this quiet.

One of the top targets on LSU’s recruiting board, Tampa quarterback Phillip Ely, will announce his college choice at 4 p.m. CDT Wednesday, Plant High School coach Robert Weiner said.

Weiner said he and Ely hadn’t discussed any “finalists,” but the coach said LSU is in good position.

“He loved LSU when he went there,” Weiner said of Ely, who visited the campus this summer. “No head coach spent the amount of time with him that coach Les Miles did, and he really liked the situation there.”

I don't know but the rumors are running wild. Youngblood is even throwing some hints out there.

About 35 minutes until the Phillip Ely PC - four-star QB from Plant (Tampa). Never lost a game as a varsity starter. Sound familiar?

Someone on another board said that he just recently received his Bama offer within the last few days. Whether or not that is true I don't know. If he didn't have a Bama offer, and just received one, it could be a reason why he never expressed interest in Bama previously but is now doing so. If you combine that with the fact that LSU just took a commitment from a QB, that's a whole new reason that Bama could have entered the mix.

If that is true and he now has a Bama offer, it could be true. Well we should all know what is going on with Phillip Ely and Bama very shortly.

One of the mods on thaRinger is saying he will commit to us from a good source. This mod is in belief like most of us that PE does not have an offer from us but now feels confident we get him. I am not sure of his sources but he has been good in the past on info. I also know that several of the Mods over there do write for the premium sites not sure about this one. Also his confirmation from his source had nothing to do with the LSU boards. FWIW.

According to BOL he hasn't announced yet but someone from rivals did post the info below in an article that has since been removed. The link has been removed but on their mainboard Ely to Bama is being discussed. Right now everyone is just waiting for Ely's official announcement. Again it won't be long before we know the real story.

Leave it to Plant quarterback Phillip Ely to continue to surprise, even off the football field. The talented senior quarterback appeared to be down to Clemson, Wake Forest, LSU, and Ole Miss. However, Ely pulled off the huge surprise when he announced he would be attending the University of Alabama. He made the news official at a 5:00 PM press conference at Plant High School. Ely went into detail about his surprise pick. Quarterback Phillip Ely is a two time State Champion and has his eyes focused on a history setting third straight title, an accomplishment neither of his predecessors in Aaron Murray or Robert Marve could accomplish in their time at Plant High school. Ely, who threw for 1,860 yards and 20 touchdowns, goes from one champion to another after picking the Crimson Tide. He is excited for the opportunity to play for a living legend in Alabama head coach Nick Saban. From the very start of his recruitment, Ely made it clear that the combination of football and academics was going to ultimately decide his final choice and according to Ely, Alabama certainly fits that big void with the Crimson Tide being one of the top football programs in American and offering plenty of options in the academic field as well. Clearly for any quarterback, getting in the right system is essential and with the fact that the quarterback position should be wide open with the departure of quarterback Craig McElroy next season. The opportunity at Alabama for Ely was certainly an attractive option. The biggest question was how hard it was for Ely to keep it a secret that not only did the Crimson Tide offered, but his impressions of the program as a whole. For weeks, and even months, he was dead silent...not even mentioning Alabama inside the top five schools he's considering. Relationships are essential and as Ely covered earlier, the bond he immediately struck with head coach Nick Saban was a key part of the decision. But also helping the Crimson Tide's chances was the connection Ely hit up with the rest of the Alabama staff. For any prospect thinking about a college choice goals are immediately set after making that decision and Ely fully realizes in joining a top program such as the Crimson Tide the expectations or goals he's set will also be raised considerably
