2016 Fall Camp Thread (Practice Reports, Press Conferences, Interviews, etc.)

RTR91, I haven't heard much about defense at all. Did they make plays? Forced fumbles, ints, pressuring the QB? Also, anything we need to know about the running game as a whole?

No clue. Just following along on Twitter.

Man I just don't know how I feel about this. Hurts is an exciting player to be sure but the prospect of him potentially being the starter is scary. He's just a True FR and WILL make mistakes. I still think Barnett has the goods and could start for 3 years for us with Hurts having packages for his talents off the bench.

Redshirt him and he would still have 2 years to start after Barnett. If Hurts starts now he will be the only QB on scholarship come spring besides the new signees because everyone else will bolt. This is a dicey situation from a depth chart perspective. Nothing against Hurts.....if he really is the best I will cheer him on mistakes and all but it will have major roster repercussions.

It`s beginning to look like the coaches have pretty well locked in on a starting O line. General agreement on that? I`m glad if that`s accurate. Can`t get too many reps together against various D fronts and blitz packages that they`ll see. Also, I assume that they get to go one-on-one in drills with the starting D line guys. Would not be surprised if they won`t be the best they`ll see all year. Great learning situation.

It would be great if they have. They need this time to build chemistry.

I really like hearing OJ Howard is catching TDs. Hope to see him more as receiver first this season

Redshirt him to sit behind Barnett and he transfers to somewhere that isn't afraid to use his talent (Which, I expect, will be what Barnett does if Hurts wins the job.). If Hurts' the best one there, then he deserves to play, freshman or not

That right guard spot is still up for grabs IMO. Taylor's DUI complicates things, but I've heard some good things on him so far.

I'd hate to see a senior lose their starting role, but he had a lot of work to do to get into game shape, and toward the end of last year it really showed as he wasn't nearly as quick as he needed to be for the blocking schemes we were trying to run.

That could be true. However, if memory serves, when BB was given opportunities, he was better than adequate. Is my memory faulty?

He struggled when he filled in for Kelly last year at center, but that's a tough job. I think he's a better fit at guard. He's a mauler and one of the strongest guys on the team.

I think Shank is in a legitimate fight for his job but it's mostly self inflicted. Historically under Saban experience on the OL is almost an insurmountable advantage, to see him trailing at this point shows a significant dissatisfaction from the staff. Hopefully he will bounce back.

The issue with managing redshirts. I think you can overthink this. Saban just puts the best players on the field and lets the chips fall where they may.

Taylor was never the most athletic OL. Then he compounded that with a poor performance against Clemson (to be fair, he was playing against a couple of first-class DLs that night, and got no help from his RT Jackson).

Still, I'm guessing what got him deep in the doghouse was not so much the performance against Clemson, but his response to a sub-par outing on the national stage. He gained flabby weight, despite having world-class nutrition available to him at a cost of $0. On top of the weight issue, he was otherwise out of shape. Then he compounded all of that with a DUI.

He has a loooonnnnggg way to go to prove he's reliable in the clutch. I hate it, but it really is self-inflicted.

He was in a fight for his starting position before the DUI issues...might have lost the job regardless.

The OL is weird in that there is almost no substitutions... it's the very opposite of the DL where at least last year we subbed three deep almost every game. On the DL newer guys get a chance to show their stuff but not so much OL.

One thing about Shank and the OL in general is we have been recruiting really well on the OL the last couple of years. It's kind of rare for a freshman to step into the OL because of the time it takes to bulk up and gain chemistry, but I'm not surprised to see sophomores and junior pushing the seniors for starting time. I think we will see more of that as long as recruiting remains so good.
