'Mad Dog' Marcio Freire dead: Surfing superstar dies at 47 after falling into giant waves

Surfing superstar "Mad Dog" Marcio Freire died Thursday at the age of 47 while surfing in the waters off Portugal.

The Brazilian was tow-in surfing on the giant waves of Nazare when he fell into the waters, according to a report.

Emergency officials retrieved Freire via jet-skis and were able to bring him back to land, but all attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, according to the local maritime authority.

"The rescuers found that the victim was in cardio-respiratory arrest, immediately starting resuscitation [maneuvers] on the sand. After several attempts, it was not possible to reverse the situation," per a statement by the Portugal's National Maritime Authority.

RIP Adolfo Kaminsky. Joining the French Resistance aged 17, he fabricated papers which saved the lives of thousands of Jews. He later made fake IDs and money for Algeria's FLN and people fighting regimes in Greece, Spain, and Latin America, as well as Vietnam draft-dodgers

I am very sad to hear this. Was, in my mind, one of the greatest rock/blues guitarists of all time.
Was fortunate to have seen him live once in New Orleans.
This calls for a good nostalgic listen to “Bolero”.
RIP

... here ya go.

... plenty of versions to choose from. Thought this 1966 version was a good one.

I listened to this so many times I wore it out

He was in concert in B'ham December of 1976. I thought about going but had an Organic Chemistry final where if I made an 81 on the final I'd get a B, or if made like 12 on the final I'd still get a C. So I didn't go to the show and studied, and made a 79 on the final for a C.

I think it was 71 or 72, at A Warehouse in New Orleans. Actually ran into an HS classmate, who was attending Tulane, at the show.
Finally getting to see Chicago for the first time ever a few months ago, the only choice i have now, losing so many of my heroes, is reliving my memories of them. They were the best times of my life, and as one of the founders of Chicago said at the show, they all made up the soundtrack of my fondest years

... I'm guessing you wished you had gone to the concert (in hindsight, of course) :)

My college roomie said O Chem was tough, but P Chem was worse. What says you?
