Since we only have 6 scholarships offers left to give this year, will this add pressure to some of the guys we are after to go ahead and commit? I have read about us possibly oversigning, but if all qualify, we can only sign 25. If Ricks gets his grades in order and re-signs, that will only leave 5 slots left. Any thoughts on this scenario?

I thoroughly enjoy keeping up with recruiting but i'll be the first to admit that i don't understand all the rules and regulations so i'll just sit back and let the experts (CNS and Staff) sign as many as they want. I say this not in a sarcastic way, but they obviously know what they are doing and i'll just enjoy the ride! ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm the same way, I try to understand the general principles without getting too involved in the details. I remember other people mentioning guys coming in December and counting in the '07 class. I know Smith (the WV kicker) is expected to do that, but have no idea who the other 2 would be (fingers crossed that Arthur Brown is one of them). I don't know if Murphy has to stay an entire year at prep school, or if he can do a Kareem Jackson and enroll in the spring at Bama.

The main question I have with backcounting is that if they are part of the '07 class, is the '07 season their redshirt year, or are they like grayshirts in the sense that they did not waste a year of eligibility or their redshirt year? I've never heard of this backcounting technique done by other schools, but i imagine it might be more common with kids graduating early. There won't be as big of a concern if a player doesn't qualify immediately b/c (assuming more kids decide to graduate early) there will be plenty of good players available to backcount against the previous class for the kids that didn't qualify.

I seriously doubt that Ricks will ever suit up for the University of Alabama.

Ditto.

We'll sign in the 27-28 range, with 3 backcounting to 2007. We'll probably have one or two not make it academically. Keep in mind, though, that for every commit past this point, we'll essentially have to lose a player currently on the team.

I have a question (mods feel free to add your input), if we over sign, is it part of the process that coach may go to a senior that never played a down and ask them to step aside and free up a scholi?

Don't know if that is done often or very little or not at all.

I doubt that a coach would be that forthright about it. Players likely see the writing on the wall before it would even come to that point (Schreiber, Barnes). With new coaches there is expected attrition b/c of different schemes and whatnot, so i wouldn't be totally surprised if we lost another player or two in the process (no clue on who it'd be).

Tubbs did that when he first took over at lowder u. He flat out told 3 or 4 guys that they were not renewing their scholarships.

jps 1983: As I understand it, if a recruit qualifies (academically) he can be signed before Dec. 31 and count against the 2007 class. We must not exceed the 25 limit for the year nor the 85 limit of total scholarships. Beginning next fall they will have 4 years of eligibility within a 5 year period.

Thx. I figured coaches wouldn't bring kids in to have them count back and lose eligibility, but i wanted to make sure. In that case, is there any indication whether Murphy can make up the grades he needs to in 1 semester and report in January to UA?
