Bama Game Thread: A-Day Game Thread ( ESPN @ 3PM CT)

I'm still not done with a 'scouting view' of the game, but after the first watch, i'll say that of the 4 drops, at least 3 of them were not good throws. They weren't horrible throws, but they also were not what they should have been.

The pass to the RB in the flat - behind him and a tad late.

The pass out to the sticks to try to convert a first down, was thrown short of the line to gain, where the WR had setup at the sticks to get a conversion. he tried to adjust to the pass being a couple yards short of the line to gain, but in the process didn't complete the catch

The throw to henderson - behind him as he was running full speed.

All three in the area that, in a perfect world, we'd like to see WRs make those catches, but the drops were probably 50% on Milroe and 50% on the WR. Maybe 60% Milroe and 40% RB just b/c most RBs don't have WR hands.

The other was more of a flat out WR issue.

Other notes so far:

his scramble on the first drive was actually a bad play from him. The D blitzed the nickel/safety/star/husky/whateverwecallitnow at the top of the field and left the slot WR uncovered for a LONG TIME before the FS was able to roll over. That should have been an easy completion to the slot guy as soon as the blitz came. The WR was running free for quite some time. the RB did a great job recognizing the blitz coming and picked it up well enough that the ball should have gotten out, but...

he had another big missed read on an RPO he gave to the RB for a 2-3 yard gain. He was reading the ILB who had coverage on the TE (Dipree). The ILB took the fake inside to the RB and so the TE flared into the flat with no one covering him at all, but Milroe handed the ball off anyway. We had 2 WRs out there blocking against 2DBs and if they just get in way a little bit, Dipree likely gets a really big gain.
I disagree about the drops - I would put them 80%+ on the receivers. Passes like that have to be caught

So what would be the QB stats if we gave each QB credit for the drops that should have been caught?

If JM finished 5/9 against a vanilla defense, are we supposed to feel good about that?

When we get to the CFP, like last year, we will see teams with a good defense that can stop most of what we do offensively. So we need to evaluate our QBs based on what will be required to succeed in the CFP.
What I can't figure out is why he only got 9 attempts???

I know CKD isn't trying to appease those of us who have concerns here on Tidefans about JM's weaknesses, but I know that CKD knows JM's weaknesses and strengths. Since the A-Day was run more like a scrimmage, you'd think JM would have been put to the test more on his weakness.

There were probably supposed to be more than 9 attempts. His runs were likely supposed to be passes. And his long passes negated him working down the field against base defense. So i dont think he worked the gameplan as designed for the scrimmage. I think he got in there to showout to the crowd and for the quick scores which took away his opportunities to get better.

I think that is why they changed to the defense on him in the 2nd half to make work the field through the intermediate and short game. He didn't move the ball when the defense dictated what they were going to give him. His body language changed...

They dont huddle now but I think JM may be a QB that often doesnt run the play called...

That makes a lot of sense!

I remember when Molly interviewed CKD after the offense had the "hot" start and he said "it vanilla defense."

That suddenly changed in the second half and so did his body language.

If you are correct, that means nothing has changed with him. He'd rather throw it deep to get the big play, but he doesn't understand the better defense will take those throws away and make him throw it underneath. Until he improves this weakness, our offense will struggle in big games against good defenses.

It's why I struggle to see him leading us to a national championship type season were we have to navigate a thought SEC schedule and then an expanded CFP.

We've got evidence now that TS is starting to embrace his abilities. It's going to get interesting.

What I can't figure out is why Milroe is still getting most of the reps with the 1's. He has shown us over multiple seasons that he simply cannot see the field and constantly leaves receivers open. I'm honestly just done with him. I wish the coaches would just move on.

As others have said - more than just those 9 plays at least had options for passing. he scrambled on a 2-3(ish) and there were some RPOs that he handed off. 1 for sure should have been a pass read, but need to dig into the others more

It *felt* more to me they were giving Mack and DL more of the testing than JM and TS. Almost like they know what they have in the top 2 guys. There was a time or two I thought they'd swap out QB, but Mack stayed in

Watching A-Day for the 3rd time: Really focusing on QBs

1st play from scrimmage started with Jam and Justice in a split back formation! Imagine the potential with the running and passing possibilities out of that formation! Welcome to he CKD offensive era!

Second play from scrimmage is a pass play and after looking down field JM takes off running for about a 10 yard game. Unless the coverage was tight, why run in a game of 2 hand touch?

3rd play: RPO and Jalen gives to the running back when a wide open receiver is in the flats. Wrong decision. Looks like his vision/decision making on RPO is still in question. This could have been his 3rd throw already, BTW.

4th play: JM throws seam/post route to Bernard. Completion, but the safety misplayed the throw. It should have been at the least a pass break up and if he broke faster it's an INT.

TS's first series with 2s:

1st play: Immediate pressure in his face off the edge and he throws the ball away. About all he could do, but in throwing it away he avoids the sack.

3rd play on 3rd and 6: TS completes to Adams on a drag route across the middle for a 1st down. Throw on time, accurately and with good coverage.

An aside: Richard Young is getting some carries and he's going to be really, really good!!! So is Daniel Hill!!!

Next play: Simpson gets pressure and moves in the pocket and then scrambles left and throws across his body toward the pylon. Receiver is in the area but DB breaks on pass and INTs, but is out of bounds. Comparing this situation with JM and it's the kind of scramble and throw JM would never make. Not an argument for TS doing the right think or wrong thing but TS shows the ability to avoid pressure, scramble and throw down field. Net zero on the play, but just an observation about the differences in the two QBs.

Next play: RPO and TS keeps for a decent gain up the middle for about 5-7 yards. TS should have probably given to Young who makes at least that many yards and maybe more.

Next play: 3rd and 6: TS misses Henderson on a short drag route across the middle. Probably his worse pass of the day. Henderson has a lot of green grass if pass is delivered accurately.

4th and 6: TS completes a 10 yard sit down route to Lewis over the middle for first down in a lot of traffic! Best throw of the game so far.

Until the next play TS runs RPO with Hill. Runs not there and TS keeps and then throws to Hill in the flats as he adjusts his arm angle to hit Hill in the flats for a nice gain. This is a Patrick Mahomes type play. Again, comparing to JM: it's a throw he might not see and if he did he can't pull off because he doesn't have that type of arm talent, especially for short throws. By far, TS's best throw!

Next play: RPO to Adams on a jet sweep! (Glad to see that play return). TS with the right read and it's a very good gain. Think Adams will be a play maker!

Next play: TS handle a bad snap and makes a great pitch to Young who scores.

1st drive for Simpson and he's 3 of 6. JM's first drive he was 1 for 1 but ran on one pass play. Already seeing the disparity with attempts.

JM's next drive (during Molly's interview with CNS so we might have missed some of these plays):

1st play: RPO - Jalen gives when he should have kept. The defensive end stayed home and did his job as he checked Jalen, but if JM keeps he's got space to beats him (and he should be able to); it's a huge run. In a live tackling game, this is a RPO that Jalen should have kept. Again, he struggles with these "options."

Next play: JM shuffles left in the pocket and hits Bernard on a throw back type play for 51 yards. Probably JM's best throw of the day. To his credit, he make a quick decision and decisive throw. It's probably his 1st read on the play but it was executed perfectly.

After the second drive he's 2 of 2 for good yardage. Both big passing plays which is his forte. But because of the big passing plays his attempts are limited. But remember both of these big plays, according to CKD, were against vanilla defense.

Not going to document Longeran's 1st drive but he make some GREAT throws. He's an obvious talent!

TS's second drive:

1st play: fakes a handoff, steps up in pocket with great footwork and floats a 20 yard pass across the middle to Prentice. Perfect execution on this one!

Next play: RPO: TS reads and gives to Jam Miller. Huge run to the 1 yard line.

Next play: RPO: Simpson keeps but gets tacked for a 3rd yard loss. Defense won on this play by covering both RB and QB run options.

Jalen's 3rd series/start of second half. CKD "halftime" interview he indicates defense has been vanilla but also says "there are some things to speed the game up, especially for the QBs" which was a foreshadow they were going to change the defense in the second half to maybe pressure the QBs more.

1st play of drive is a straight handoff.

2nd play: JM drops for pass. He looks left for a possible 1st read but quickly comes back to a deep pass that was well covered. Incomplete pass.

3rd and 9: JM drops and there's nothing (defense is tightening) and Jalen throws out of bounds.

Defense/Crimson gets first points on the board: 31-6.

Next drive is by DL: stopped on 3 plays

Milroe's next drive: Looks like a mix of some 1's and 2's.

1st play: RPO: Jalen reads and gives to Young. Probably should have kept: I think this is 3 for 3 now on misreading the RPO to the running back.

Next play: JM throws a called short pass play to YOung in flats. Good throw, but Young drops it. Would not have mattered in this case because he would have been immediately tacked.

Next play, 3rd and 9: JM passes to sideline toward sticks. Hamilton drops a good pass that could have been a 3rd down conversion. A little nit-picky but Hamilton ran a good route, but it was covered tightly by the DF. JM threw the pass a little short of the route Hamilton ran. It might have been dictated by the tight coverage. But Hamilton should have caught it. It would have been close to a 1st down or left a 4th and short. This is the type of throw JM usually struggle to make, but it was a good one that his receiver should have helped him with.

TS first drive of second half (looks like a mixture of 1s):

1st play: TS copletes long throw to Prentice in the flats for a short gain. Defnese played this one well.

After short run: 3rd and 8: TS is flushed from pocket and he scrambled to his left to make a short completion to Odom but short of the sticks. 4th down

JM's next drive:

JM drops and gets pressured and nervously throws a short wobbly pass that's incomplete. Defense is winning now more than offense. JM has missed last 4 passes.

Next play: JM is flushed from pocket and runs out of bounds. JM is starting to get frustrated now.

BTW, it's at this point when JM is struggling that commentators try to compare JM to Lamar Jackson.

JM's next series (which should have probably been TS's turn) but I figure they are trying to get JM some more passing reps):

1st play: JM throws over the middle (a pass we don't see him hardly ever throw) to Henderson. It should have been caught but it was a high throw and off target a little. This is obviously a "weak" area of JM's game and it showed on this play. .BTW, this "drop" was more on JM than Henderson.

3rd down and 14 to go: JM makes only his 3rd completion of the day. Throw is to his tight end just inside the numbers but it's thrown about 3 yards short of the line to gain as well as inaccurate. Reciever makes catch but is tacked immediately. 4th down. Jalen is very frustrated now.

TS's next drive:

1st down: Simpons drops and surveys the field; steps us and finds wide open Bernard for 40 yards.

Next play: TS is sacked on 1 hand touch with rush up the middle.

2nd and 10: TS drops and throws quick pass to sideline. Bernard drops it. Would have been about a 7-8 yard gain.

That's the last play of the game. Thanks for coming to the BamaMoon A-Day QB review. No question TS out performed JM. Both had a drop or two that could have helped them but the biggest takeaway is JM's weaknesses are still there. TS has an opportunity to pass him in the fall if things stay the same.

I guess because my post is so long, I'm having trouble editing it.

But a couple extra thoughts:

I think JM only had series with the 1s against the 1s. Not sure it changes much since he had the best receivers but probably stiffer coverages. If he passes some of the times he should have he would have probably had at least 3-5 more attempts.

Also, I don't think TS had one series exclusively with the 1s. Maybe at one point there was a mixture of 1s and 2s. Again, probably doesn't change the outcome much, except he seems to handle pressure up the middle a little better than JM and as better footwork and can shift in the pocket so if he ran more plays with the first receivers it could have possibly helped him with some better stats if he was throwing to better receivers.

Understood and agreed. There are clearly things we armchair QBs can see that make us wonder and wish about Ty. Obviously with two completely different coaching staffs both having him 2nd there has to be some unseen thing holding him back. I sure hope he gets it figured out. Him taking the next step would also push the others and therefore elevate the whole QB room to the ultimate benefit of the whole team!

I am a native and current resident of West Tennessee where Ty is from. I watched him obliterate my former high school team and I watched him win a very entertaining down-to-the-last-minute battle against the local powerhouse 2A school (Trenton-Peabody) on his way to a state championship. It would be awesome if he also led my Bama team to a Natty!

I’ll stick to what I’ve always said tho…I will be 100% behind whoever the coaches put out there!

It's funny how differently people can see things. I am not saying you are right or wrong or that I am right or wrong just interesting how differently I view a few of these plays.

IMO on the 2nd play Milroe needs to come off his first read more quickly. but he had pretty quick pressure up the middle (maybe a hold) and decisively took off. I think it was a solid play tbh.

on 3rd down I'm not entirely sure if its a real RPO or just made to look like one. If it is an RPO I think he actually made the right read. I think he is supposed to be reading the Edge player and throw the ball if he crashed down against the run. The edge stayed there so he handed the ball off. But again, I actually don't think that play is a real RPO because of how quickly he hands the ball off.

On the 3rd down play: IDK for sure, but if he's running a true triple option to either give to running back, keep and run or pass option, the tight end was the "correct" decision in terms of what the play "could have been." If the "pass" was not a true option there why have the tight end running a route and 2 blockers ahead of him blocking down field? It could have been a huge play if executed correctly.

that second play was definitely a miss on Milroe. The D blitzed the slot CB. RB did a great job and picked it up. Milroe never saw that the blitz meant the slot WR was wide open for a while as the D was trying to roll an ILB all the way over into coverage and it took him a while to get there. Milroe had time to deliver the pass before the inside pressure got there. With the LB rolling that far and with the S in the middle of the field that should have been a gift to the O that Milroe just flat missed.

I agree with Moon on the 3rd play also. Couple of reads:

presnap I don't think that should have been a give as we didn't have the numbers to block all the D guys on that side of the field since the TE is releasing. OT had a DL, OC had a DL, playside OG combo'ed the DL with the OC, then to backside LB - no one even looked at the playside LB and he met the RB right in the hole at the LOS so that could have been a no-gain play but luckily the RB was able to at least get the 2 yards for a first. maybe, just maybe there should have been a post-snap read on the playside LB staying in the hole or going with the TE. Right at the snap the playside LB steps forward instead of going with the TE so the read would still be to not give to the RB. Net, it was a mis-read either way.

Next read would be if the Edge stays put to cover the QB keep, it should be a throw (but Milroe already messed that option up by giving when he shouldn't have). The TE was wide open with two WR blockers in front against only 2 DBs to that side of the field so probably goes for a big gain. The slot WR stays in view and it's easy to see he's setting up to block the DB to the inside of the field.
