A look at Shula..............

From watching a Shula coached team from the beginning of the year until present I must say I am impressed with what I have seen.
I consider this year CMS 1st real team, (that is) with an off season program, spring training and a summer program. I was impressed with how his team (with the full complement of 1st-string plays) played. I was impressed with his offence. It was pass on any down and run when he wanted to and both worked. OK, three of the first 4 games were against non-ranked non-SEC teams but one could see where he was going and it looked good. And when he lost the 1st team players he changed.
I also like how he sees all aspects of the game as important, offence, defense and special teams. How he has played the best 11, freshman as well as upper classman.
A year ago he started with one hand tied behind his back "BUT" he never made (and still does not) excuses. It seems he recruits good men and he coaches them well.
At this point in time it looks to me (no expert, just 40 years of BAMA ball) as if BAMA is in good hands and things are going to just go up from here.

Things may be going up (I sure hope they are) but what signs has CMS given that you as a fan of Bama football that would indicate he is progressing as a football coach? I see a coach unwilling to make a gutsy call to pull off a win over a team with the same talent level. I see a coach who has a grocery list on the sideline of things to do and never wavers, even if the situation demands it. I've heard stories of how Coach Bryant changed his offense to the wishbone because it was the hottest thing in college football at the time. Wasn't he also the coach when Scott Hunter threw for all those yards? He may not have liked how the game was played, but Coach Bryant sure counted it among his 323 I'm sure. I guess my point is that this style of play he has adapted is not winning games and maybe slight changes are in order to try and jump start the team.

Every time i get upset, i have to remember that we are down 21 scholarship players. Lets just say out of those 21 that they could have missed on half of them (probably a high number, but oh well). That would still leave us 10-11 players who would be making an impact on this team. To me, that seems like an awful lot for a coach to have to deal with and there is no doubt to me, that with 10-11 more impact players, this team would be 7-1 at worst...

ummm...you said you haven't seen CMS change his game plan? Let's see. The first three games we has a very balanced attack. Now we are a primary rushing team--first in the SEC. Nope no change there. Until the last game, we only passed a dozen times a game if that much to passing 28 times (where the WR were wide open no less!). Nope, no change.

The only thing is that except for the QB position, we are still among most of the talent in the SEC. Compare us to TENN...either they are badly coached, or they do not have very good players - if we have such bad players, as everyone is saying.

Even if we did not lose the scholarships, would we still be in this QB situation that we are in?

Must be

What is today, national "Bash Coach Shula Day"? Seems like everytime someone posts anything complimentary about CMS, bashers are all over it.

It's happening on most of the 4-5 Bama boards I frequent today for some reason. Just don't understand it.

Ya think it has to do with the persuasiveness that Paul Finebaum has on the mentality of a few of these people who are so EXPERT to think they know enough to say these things about Shula or other players & coaches??????? If so - Paul Finebaum has accomplishe what he has set out to do: which is to cause trouble, diminish the image of fan-bases, attempt to ruin programs from the roots on up, & to totally sitting back & watch the pot boil...

Amazing ... HOW could these people even LISTEN to - much less - believe or REPLY to the likes of that wanna-be athlete who is so jealous of football players & coaches that this is the only way he can figure to compete......... Just beats me...

Don't know if I'd even give the them satisfaction....

of using the term EXPERTS referring to some of these people, RamJam. I'd liken it to sheep that jump on anything ole Finebum says as gospel, whether it makes sense, or not.

Drives me nuts sometimes! :rolleye2:

We have as much talent on our first string...

but have some of you people not noticed the lack of depth beyond that? Tennessee can lose all sorts of starters to all kinds of felonies and not have a sharp drop off between #1 and #2. With us, it's like an abyss at some positions.

I can handle opinions when they are back up with well-reasoned, but some of what I've been reading today takes the cake. STOP THE INANITY and all this insanity, please!

I think there's a lot of machismo in play with the bashers. Makes them feel macho to come across as stern taskmasters who demand perfection. I think most folks see right through their bluster.

Yeah, I guess 20 posts or less and a transistor radio tuned to Finebaum would make anyone an expert. Some descriptive words come to mind for these newbie "experts" but we're supposed to be nice.

Finebaum loses an audience member today

I've listened to Finebaum on the Internet a lot to try to stay in touch, since I'm in North Carolina. After about five minutes of Shula bashing today, I decided I've had enough of listening to Bama "fans" like Jim from Tuscaloosa, so my Finebaum days are over.

I just wish there was away to *listen* to the TideFans board, instead of having to take the time to read posts.

Roll Tide!

I am convinced you're right about this. These people take the words of the "all-knowing" Finebaum as gospel.

It is truly sad.

I believe that most of his "core" of callers are paid employees of his show. He admitted to a "non-core" caller one day that "Shane" is on the payroll. I assume that "Jim from Tuscaloosa", "Phyllis from Mulga", "I-Man", "Bobby from Homewood" and a few others are as well.

He pays these people to call in and stimulate discussion. Don't assume that these people are really "fans" of the universities that they appear to support.

I catch the show on occasion if I am able to leave work before 7 pm. You just have to take it with a grain of salt. If you accept it as entertainment, which it is, quite a bit of it is funny. Some of the real callers are more hilarious than the paid ones.
