SARDIS CITY — Alabama football coach Nick Saban’s summer camps are noted for their toughness, and Sardis assistant coach Dusty Darnell is a first-hand observer.

Darnell, who has worked camps at Alabama since 2006, served as a staff member for Saban’s one-day camp Saturday.

Darnell will work another Alabama camp in July.

“His first year down there, all of us coaches went from (Mike) Shula to Saban,” Darnell said.

“Shula was a dog-and-pony show, and Saban came in and it was daylight to dark (the difference).

“He said we’re going to treat these little kids and high school kids like we do our guys. They demand out of them like they do all their players.

“They work them … they work the fire out of them.

This part is pretty telling:

“The first camp, in ’07, there were 150 kids that went home during flex. They were just shell-shocked. It was hot doing Scott Cochran’s conditioning program … there were a lot of unhappy mommas.

“They’re going to get their money’s worth. I’m an Auburn fan, but I told Alabama’s coach the other day if I had a kid right now, I’d send them to Alabama. They’re going to work if you send them down there.”

I do know that at the camp this past week a lineman said, "I can't do it any more," while working on a particularly difficult technique. Coach Saban sent the kid home and had his money refunded to him. He was not happy.

Ha! Well that's okay... Auburn needs players too!

I took my son and his little cousin up to T-town to attend the youth camp (ages 8-14) last week. I’ve been meaning to share the experience here at Tidefans, but it’s been a busy week at work! This may get a little lengthy, but it’s the off-season so I hope you enjoy the information.

Check In time was Sunday from 12:00 – 2:30. This took place in “The Zone” which is the new North end zone facility. The kids were registered, assigned “Teams” (used for playing a type of touch football game every night), and given their dorm keys if they were overnight campers. Once that was complete, they proceeded down the stairs to the tunnel, walked onto Bryant-Denny and lined up for a camp picture with Coach Saban. We parents were able to walk onto the field with the kids so that quite an experience!

Coach Saban said later that evening that he took over 800 pictures that afternoon. There were 996 kids total in the camp and the rest of the pictures were made up over the next day or so. Once they took their picture, they were told to get to the dorm (Tutwiler Hall). I thought they would have plenty of time to unpack, unwind, and maybe meet later that evening for a welcome speech from CNS – I was wrong! A coach was waiting at the steps at Tutwiler telling the kids to put their stuff up in their room, grab their helmet and cleats and get back down to the front and they would be bussed over to the football complex for agility drills, 40 times, vertical jump etc… They did this in the indoor facility. I was thinking, “heck yeah, this is going to be worth the money”!

Once that was complete, CNS rounded them up and gave a really inspirational 20-30 speech to them about Discipline, Commitment, Responsibility, and Effort. He doesn’t sugar coat or sweeten his delivery one bit. His demeanor is exactly the same as it is when he is talking to the press. After his speech, the kids headed out to the practice fields for evening practice that lasted until 5:00 and then broke for dinner. They reconvene at 7:00 for an hour of “Bama Ball”, which is the modified touch football game.

Monday and Tuesday they followed the below itinerary which is like two-a-day practices.
8:30 Camp Meeting
8:45 Position Meetings
9:00 Stretch (some of the current players would participate in the stretches and Coach Cochran is running around mic’d up and pumping everyone up the whole time. No lack of effort from that guy!)
9:15 – 11:00
A. Running Program / Agilities
B. Individual
C. Sub Group (Off/Def Group)
D. Group (Offense v. Defense) 7 on 7
Team
11:00 – 12:30 Lunches
1:45 – Start 2nd Practice and repeat the above sessions

It was all definitely worth money. I heard several parents say that they brought their kids to a couple of camps while Coach Shula was here and that he only made an appearance on the first and last day of the camp and that there wasn’t much to it at all. They said this was pretty much like night and day. CNS is out there with the kids the entire time overseeing and coaching. The majority of the time he had the air horn and would signal the session changes.

Some of the highlights:
We parents probably seemed more excited about the camp than the kids themselves. They were out there busting their butts in the heat while we were meeting players, getting autographs, and just enjoying the ability to get a firsthand look at the facilities.

Keep in mind that the current players are there doing voluntary workouts so they are not led by coaches at all. I was pleased to see so many there.

- Met Terrence Cody on the first evening and shook his enormous hand. He looked like he has lost maybe 15 lbs at least. I watched him during the stretches with the kids and was surprised at how fast he could jump back up from an “up down” (belly flop); he was quick for a big guy.

- Got to watch the entire D-Line work through some drills for about 10 minutes before we were asked to leave the field. I saw Ming and one of the other recruits, but I can’t place the name with his face. I was not aware of just how big Lorenzo Washington really is.

- Saw Javier Arenas and was surprised at how muscular he is. He looks bigger than last season.

- Spoke with Justin Woodall for just a minute. He was nice and said he was ready to make the calls back there.

- Spoke briefly to Greg McElroy, Eryk Anders, Mark Ingram, Luther Davis, Baron Huber, Leigh Tiffin, Cory Reamer, A.J. McCarron.

-Spoke briefly with Upchurch. He said he felt good and was ready to go.

-Spoke with William Vlachos. I’ve been looking forward to seeing him on the field since he was recruited. Go watch his Youtube video if you get a chance. This guy finishes his blocks with a mean streak. I think he will be fine at Center.

-Was able to get CNS to autograph my Dad’s “Saban Straw Hat”, which was a nice Father’s Day gift.

-Got Cornelius Bennett’s autograph and spoke with his wife a little bit. His son was participating in the camp. I believe she told me that he was a RB and LB, but he was working in the RB group at the camp.

-Gerald “Smoke”Dixon was one of the coaches helping with the kids and took a picture with my son at the dorm.

-One parent that I became friends with saw T. Richardson after one of the evening practices. I had been telling him about Trent earlier that morning since I’m from the Pensacola area. I asked him what he thought…he said that kid’s got muscles on muscles!

I took several pictures, but I don’t have an account with an image hosting site. I’ll work on getting one and try to get the pictures up later.

What site do you guys recommend for image hosting? Does anyone use Picasa?

cooleddie, thanks for that camp rundown. Now go get those pics hosted and get them up tout de suite. :)

You've got it, SD! I used Picasa and I don't believe it allows hotlinking so I just pasted a link to the web album. Plus, it's quite a few photos and I don't want to butcher up the thread. The pictures are somewhat small initially, but you can click on the magnifying glass icon near the upper right corner of the image to blow it up.

Hope you guys enjoy.
