Yeah, so Bama lost to Vandy (SEC), UT (SEC), and Oklahoma (SEC) and we need to look at non-conference opponents?
That's just this time, though. That doesn't mean it won't shake out differently next time. You can't control SEC scheduling, but you CAN control OOC scheduling, and that's what this is all about. I've been saying for weeks that if we get left out, we should cancel the Ohio St series. I actually kinda wanted to play that series, but what's the point now? Why schedule a game you have a close to 50/50 chance of losing when a win isn't going to help you anyways, in the eyes of the committee. In fact, you may even get put behind them if you beat them. To their credit, this committee did honor H2H whenever possible, but that doesn't mean the next group will. Nothing is out of the question after the atrocities overseen by this committee.

And because humans thought they were much smarter than computers. Humans have biases though while computers do not.
The Dan Wetzels and Tim Brandos of the world convinced people that computers were more corrupt than people, that the bowl commissioners were hiding behind computers to get the outcomes they wanted

So the joke's on them when they switched to a human model out of the guise of fairness

I'll reiterate this ... I think, looking at Bama in isolation, we got what we deserved. HOWEVER, looking at it in the context of who we beat, the schedule we played, who others didn't beat or schedule, then we earned a CFP position. Warde Manual is the weakest chair the CFP could have selected. His explanations from one week to the other and sometimes even in the same sentence were nonsensical and contradictory. Add all that together and it makes for good tv, I guess?

Until and unless the wannabes play the same schedules as the SEC, there should be no opportunity for them to earn a bid into the CFP. They could beat any given team on any given week but they don't have to play 8+ games of toughness. And why would they now?

Exactly.

And by rewarding SOS, it's not been commensurate do degree of difficulty. Playing 5+ more difficult teams is not equal to having only one more loss.

The part I'm still trying to wrap my oversized head around is.....after 14 years of "Alabama shouldn't play for the title, they didn't even win their conference," we have dumbed it down to, "just making your conference championship game is OK."

Except, of course, when it isn't since I don't see UNLV anywhere in this playoff....

Nah, he's just another suit sent out to say something.

Don't you remember this one from Kirby Hocutt, who once held this same job?

Kirby Hocutt BEFORE the 2017 B1G Title Game
“Reflecting on the discussions over the last two days, obviously there’s three spots that separate them right there, but it’s close separation from team No. 5, Alabama; 6, Georgia; 7, Miami; 8, Ohio State. Those teams are close. Very little separation in the committee’s eyes between teams 5 through 8.”

Kirby Hocutt AFTER the 2017 B1G Title Game:
" The committee views Alabama as a non-champion that is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country, and that's why they are in. Here is why the committee ranked Alabama at No. 4. Alabama has one loss, and it was on the road to now No. 7 Auburn. Ohio State has two losses, one by 15 points at home to Oklahoma, and the other more damaging by 31 points at unranked Iowa. Alabama is superior in just about every statistical category that we think are important. For example, they are No. 1 or No. 2 in every key defensive category."

=======

Fine and dandy, except Kirby went from "it's razor thin" to "it wasn't ever even all that close" (basically) AFTER Ohio State won their conference championship.

The decision was 100% right.
The propaganda was 100% something else.

The saving grace of the committee for years wasn't that they didn't say horribly stupid things, or have horribly stupid rankings at various points. It was just that they generally cleaned it up by the end of the year, with perhaps a couple exceptions.

To me though the committee has become hopelessly unmoored. They went from perhaps overvaluing SoS (ranking 2 loss Auburn at one point over undefeated Wisconsin and 1 loss Alabama), to what ever this is now.

To give it some context, in this last ranking it would have been a bit like ranking Alabama over Georgia and Indiana as well as Clemson over SMU. In fact, I'd argue that might have been less aggressive as the more losses a team has the more valid it is to question their resume.

The whole thing is a joke, and I think what the previous stuff that irritated me, and irritated you comes down to is a committee that very nearly came close to disastrous rankings multiple times in the past, but got pulled back from the edge by a few adults in the room. This time there weren't enough adults in the room...
