Hey listen to this argued with a LSU fan today over how many championships we had. He kept saying 11 and i nver could convince him it was 12 ! just a pice of info thought i would share

Roll Tide!!!!

Cut him a break.

He can keep up with LSUs national championships on one hand. It gets a lot more complicated to count Alabama's national championships.

I had a similar problem with a Gayder fan he said we claim more than we have won . I asked him how many SEC championships they had before coach superior. They get real iritated when you ask them those questions. He tried to come back and ask how many National championships we had before Coach Bryant. I said "5". I said we also have as many as you had in the 90's.
Remember We have a mueseum they have pamphlets (the Superior years, Life with Nick)

Why don't we claim those others? Is it because the poll for each of those years we don't claim was not widely used at the time? It's not like a People's Champion poll, is it? Even if it is, at least we aren't claiming it.

...the govorning body today is the BCS ...

When did the BCS become a/the "govorning(sic) body"?

Last I checked, the BCS had no governing authority. All it is is a coalition of bowls, conferences, polls (including computer polls), which has tweaked its formula each year, in an effort to establish a fair, universally accepted means of determining a national championship for division one college football--no governing authority there that I can see.

Now, on the other hand, the AP poll, with all its flaws and bias, has been around for many years and has been widely accepted, if not respected, for much longer than has the BCS.

Now, don't kid yourself. If Bama had been in USC's position in 2003, we would have proudly accepted and claimed the AP championship. Had the BCS been as perfect in 2003 as you would like us to think that it was, it would have matched USC and LSU. OU would have been left out in the cold. We had a split championship that year--just as has happened many times over the years. Each champion is every bit as legitimate as the other.

to bad we don't officially claim 66 and 77---I still like to claim both of these because I felt we got majorally shafted by the polls both of these times. 3 national championships in a row twice. that would have been unreal to have gotten the upi or ap championships in one or both of those seasons.

The "12" are #1 in either the UPI or AP poll.

Food for thought...

The same groups that voted us for the NC in '41 were the same groups that voted us for NC in '34.

Technically, I agree that we claim 12, but we should only claim 11. The 1941 championship should not be claimed by Alabama.

1 common group (Houlgate).

1941
Alabama: Houlgate
Minnesota: AP, Billingsley, Boand, DeVold, Dunkel, Football Research, Helms, Litkenhous, National Championship Foundation, Poling
Texas: Berryman, Williamson

1934
Alabama: Dunkel, Houlgate, Poling, Williamson
Minnesota: Billingsley, Boand, Dickinson, Football Research, Helms, Litkenhous, National Championship Foundation

We now accept the AP poll as a "valid" determinant of a national champion, at least we did as recently as 2003. And if a team is #1 in the AP but not the BCS, they may try to claim a national championship anyway. Was the AP poll widely accepted when it had only been around for a short time? Or did we just not care as much about having a champion, and accepted disagreement in the various polls and other systems?

But '34 was before the AP or UPI/Coaches Polls. And 4 different polls voted us NC in '34. Where in '41 Houlgate was the onlly 1. My whole point is that we were a 2 loss team and only 1 poll out of many gave us the NC and we should not claim it.

The BCS was create to determine the national champion. Period. It isnt LSUs fault if the system is goofy and didnt pair up USC to lose to LSU instead of Oklahoma. The Ap while around and respected yadda yadda , it is no longer the standard. Ergo no tostito AP Championship Game next year in Arizona.
As for what Bama fans might say if they were in USCs place ie Bama was voted by the AP as champs , won a BCS and all is irrelavent to my point. The media wouldnt recognize us a playing for an unprecedented third MNC.

BTW I never kid myself.
