Alabama's Schedule & Oponent Open Dates; How is it generated?

Our schedule and oponents open dates.

Having heard that Penn State was going to be on our schedule, and the former CMS having them dropped, and then the articles about CNS wanting Notre Dame and such, who actually has input and influence on creating our schedule? This article has a post at the bottom that implicates the SEC commish. How much influence does CNS have on our schedule and can he do anything about every other school having an open date, like UT has every year for as long as I can remember.

I think the University has little or no control over the conference games. I'm sure we could complain about all the open dates other schools have before they play us, but it would probably fall on deaf ears. The out of conference games are whatever Mal Moore and Nick Saban want.

That can't be some kind of coencidence that every team we play either has an open date or a patsy the week before they play us. 12 in a row is a trend.

CMS didn't drop them. Mal Moore actually pushed back the home and home with them.

That answers part of my question. I remembered that we were going to pick Penn State back up prior to CMS coming on board. I assumed that CMS had influence on that home and home being dropped...hence the reason for my post. I was really more curious about how the schedule gets created, the fact that so many teams seem to get open dates before us which is great for allowing players to recover from dings and small injuries, and whether or not we set the schedule or there really are powers that be out to stack things against us.

Regardless, bring it on. CNS and staff, our current players, and all recruits coming on board can handle it.

I know back when Roy Kramer was the SEC commissioner he was the one everyone blamed for all open dates(being a tennessee guy). Not sure who we can blame now.

The way I see it is, the more of the better teams we play year in and year out only can make us better able to win those games going forward and add CNS to the mix and it just gets better.

Even add in the off week for our rivals. The harder the climb, the better view from the top.

2 cents and a cup of jo.

...Correct, except this year they don't! ...But it is the 1st time in something like 12 years. They play MSU on 10/13. Good question!

Roll Tide!:BigA:

the SEC office makes up the conference schedule. It is up to the universities to fill in the blanks with OOC teams. If the other programs wish to leave the date before the Bama game open that is their prerogative. Scheduling OOC games requires that both parties have the same open date.

speaking of scheduling...is there a time for the homecoming game yet? i know they are usually about 1? any chance it'll be at 6?

My question: Is the University willing to accept a loss of revenue to play some of the big dogs? In other words, is the University willing to accept a home and home series with one of the big boys instead of a Western Carolina at home every year? Given the effects of probation, the answer was no in the relatively recent past. We shall see if CNS has changed things...

The answer is yes but the years will be selective where we will have at least 7 home games.

Let's start at the begining to answer your question. When the SEC took over the scheduling of the conference games, the obvious # 1 rule instituted by Roy Kramer was that Bama would play Ole Miss on the week before the UT game and that UT would have an open date. Just as obvious would be the annual complaining about same by Bama. Finally, after Kramer's retirement, the SEC relented and told Bama that they would schedule UT also on that date. I can visualize the person hanging up the phone with Bama and turning to the schedule makers and telling them to come up with a way to schedule UT on the week before Bama without having big Roy come to Birmingham and tear the place down. Well we have all seen the Hummer commercial with the tall chick with legs up to her ears and the tall guys in the drawing room trying to come up with something new for Hummer. Then the little short guy walks by and says, "Why don't you build one smaller?" Well this is how I visulize what happened in the SEC schedule room. Some little short nerd walks by and says, "Why don't you schedule UT with MSU and give all of the other seven opponents the week off before Bama?"

There sure is a lot of controversy about these open dates. I read an article in the Huntsville Times about that particular subject. It has some of the league coaches preferences concerning open dates. It also contained an interesting statistic and as well all know, 'There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.' But here it is anyway.

Based on recent history in the SEC, teams with extra preparation time don't benefit. In fact, it's better not to have an open date.

From 2004-2006, SEC teams coming off an open date that played league opponents had an 18-22 record.

Tide case open on open dates

I reckon that's because most SEC teams were playing BAMA after that open date. ROLL TIDE !!!

Sad to say but in recent years thats not been the case, but that is all changing now. Bama WILL start affecting stats like that lol

I dont really care who has an open date or a week team the week before they play us, so long as CNS and the staff do there jobs (and they will) it wont matter!!!!!!
