This is pretty amazing!

Working Replica of Noah's Ark Opens In Schagen, Netherlands.

The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was thrown open Saturday for the first crowd of curious Pilgrims and townsfolk to behold the wonder.

Of course, it's only a replica of the biblical Ark , built by Dutch Creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.

The ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house.

Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold.

A contractor by trade, Huibers built the ark of cedar and pine -Biblical Scholars debate exactly what the wood used by Noah would have been.

Huibers did the work mostly with his own hands, using modern tools and with occasional help from his son Roy. Construction began in May 2005.

On the uncovered top deck - not quite ready in time for the opening - will come a petting zoo, with baby lambs and chickens, and goats, and one camel.

Visitors on the first day were stunned.

"It's past comprehension, " said Mary Louise Starosciak, who happened to be bicycling by with her husband while on vacation when they saw The ark looming over the local landscape.

"I knew the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big.

"

There is enough space near the keel for a 50-seat film theater where kids can watch a video that tells the story of Noah and his ark.

Replica of Noah's Ark built by a Dutch contractor.

It was built approximately to scale, however is 1/2 the length and 1/3 the width of the Biblical dimensions. It was built to show the world how massive the Ark was and how so many animals could have been housed for a long time.

Thanks. Had no idea such a thing was going on.

The capacity of Noah's ark was approx 525 railroad boxcars, or would hold approx 125,000 sheep size animals. Not that that many were needed. More than enough to hold all the 'kinds' of landed biological life. i.e., there only needed to be one kind of dog, from which wolves, foxes, etc. would come; one kind of cat from which lions, tigers, alley cats, etc. would come.

It's interesting that the only way you can reconcile the varied complexity of our biosphere with the shockingly limited space on the ark is by use of evolution. I'm also glad that glad Noah had room for all the fish (silicone-sealed joints ftw!), water-dwelling mammals (amazing that he could fit two blue whales in there!), and the extremeophile life at the deep-sea hydrothermal vents that depend on toxic hydrogen sulfide. (must have used a utrahyperbaric chamber heated to 400 degrees C kept at a pH of <3 to wrangle that trick!) Not to mention that he was able to congregate all kinds of plant and animal life that absolutely require various climates for survival. Each stall must have been weather-controlled, I guess?

Even by using the "two cats" or "two dogs" approach, there is still the fact that some species aren't found at all in the Middle East.

Why would a blue whale or fish need to be put in an ark during a flood?

Why would a blue whale or fish need to be put in an ark during a flood?
Large changes in salt concentration from such a massive addition of fresh water can screw with tonicity and cause widespread death. As freshwater and saltwater environments converge, you would expect that very few organisms could survive the change.

Well as a believer, I BELIEVE that God had his hand in the flood and how the whales/fish survived. Maybe it was just divine thing, not so much a scientific thing.

I don't figure Noah had an utrahperbaric chamber on hand but he didn't have a skill saw either. I just don't get why some try so hard to discredit faith with science. Religion is about faith in things not seen....kind of like the wind. I feel it blowing but I can't see it. Maybe someone will tell me that I can't see the wind because my optical chamber is paranormal to the third degree with a hexagon flash point - 10 degrees to the south....ect. JMO
