I agree with others that Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit are probably the best right now, although they still aren't close to Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles. I never get tired of hearing Keith and Frank call the Goal Line Stand play from the '79 Sugar Bowl. They could get fans on the edge of their seats even if viewers were not a fan of either team.

Thinking tonight, many of us grew up with Musburger, Jackson, Vern, etc. If I am 14 and listening to games who is that Keith Jackson, or Musburger of today? Is it Chris Fowler and Herby? Who are those iconic announcers of today?
Perhaps Kirk is the best of today.

Most of the ones on tv now have an over-inflated opinion of themselves.

IMHO, there is simply nobody that compares to Keith Jackson... 😎

I'm not so sure. Could be that they're right and it's the SEC refs who are wrong. (Couldn't decide whether that should be blue font.)

Seriously, Against Vandy, the SEC review office blew a clear targeting call on a hit Williams took. I've said a hundred times I cut the guys on the field a bit of slack due to how fast the game is today. It's about impossible not to miss some.

But the guys in the review room have endless time and camera angles. They can review frame by frame, with several cameras synched up. I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist. But given the frequency with which they continue to make bad calls despite all their advantages, I can't help but wonder about ulterior motives.

Also, did they miss an intentional grounding on Pavia? He was flushed to his right under intense pressure and threw the ball away. But I didn't think the throw made it back to the LOS. Did anybody else notice that? Am I wrong? Or is there another explanation?

I did notice that the Alabama sideline didn't seem to object to the no-call.
Yeah, I noticed that as well, but wasn't sure if he was outside of the tackle box. The ball clearly did not make it to or across the LOS... 🤔

On your previous point, the Review guys should be held to a higher standard than the on-field officials. Clearly, they are not!

The night games in Baton Rouge were riveting. In 67 Alabama prevailed 7-6 with a controversial touchdown on a fumble that was judged to happen after the runner crossed the goal line.

The WWL broadcast of Notre Dame vs LSU was memorable. It wasn't hard to root for LSU then.

Watson at the goal line! give him six! Big Orange. John Ward was great.

I have to say that Gary Sanders and the crew were known to cry at length over close calls.
The awbern announcers do that and much more nowadays... 😖

I enjoyed watching the skyview version of the UGA v Kentucky game. There were no announcers. It was just game and crowd noise with the PA announcer. I didn't have to hear dumb comments or discussions about replay or targeting stupidity. It was great.
exactly. The great announcers of the past knew when to shut up. Now watching tv is much like being at a game. Somebody somewhere decided we needed "noise" to fill all the time when there was no noise and noise is not needed. I listed to Bama radio and sync up the radio / tv when I'm watching.

I don't see any of the younger guys that know what that balance is. They think every play is a SportsCenter highlight call. Play by play : Joe Tessitore is the poster boy for all that is wrong in announcing. Analysis: Herbstreit over analyzes everything without adding much value at all to what I see on the screen.

Unlike some, I think McIlroy does a decent job. The good PBP guys shut up and don't act like the hype guy. The good analysts tell me what the options are before a play starts or what the QB was seeing afterward. They don't look at 1000 angles of a targeting call that is a tossup everytime because nobody knows what it is. They also point out and hold accountable refs whey they obviously miss calls (the targeting no-call on the UGA guy who leaped into the scrum and all Herbstreit said was "that could be targeting" instead of "Why are they not calling that targeting if they called a much less sinister play targeting on the Bama guy?").

Drives me nuts. OR when it is obviously a play that needs a review and nobody says anything. WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING AS THE ANALYST? if you can't point out those obvious calls why should I listen to you? I've decided I'm not and am going with my homies on CTSN.

Tony Romo is an excellent color guy for the NFL.
Agree. IMO, Romo and Nance are the best today and as good as anyone from the past. I go back to Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese and includes Jackson/Broyles, Schenkel or Jackson/Wilkinson, Gowdy/DeRogatis or Christman, et al.

The irony is that when it was first announced that Romo was being considered I was incredulous thinking that he would be awful. IMO, he is easily the most insightful, has great timing and a pleasant on-air personality, and is incredibly articulate. I don’t know that most realize how gifted someone must be to be a good analyst.

I also like Tirico and Collingsworth, though CC can be a bit wordy at times but it’s easy to forgive someone who seems to have no malice towards anyone.

Also like Sean McDonough, though he seems to be injecting himself/opinions into his broadcasts more lately. Don’t care for his analyst too much, though he does seem to be improving.

Im sorry but Dave Neal and Dave Rowe were the pinnacle of college football color commentary for me. I will never forget "Dave that is just big man on big man."
