Another Lundquist fumble

During Saturday's game Verne Lundquist, while commenting on an extraneous factoid about Heisman winners from the SEC, commented that it must really grind Alabama fans that Auburn has two Heismans and we have none. Uh, Verne, not at all, actually. Coach Bryant dispelled that notion years ago. At Alabama, we value winning and championships, not trophies for individual awards. If such honors come along as a result of the success of the team, so be it.

The year Pat Sullivan won the Heisman, we beat them 31-7.

Someone broadcasting an SEC game should have a better grasp of history.

Yeah, I caught that, too. I loved how he said that someday when a Tide player does win it, how BIG a deal it will be in Tuscaloosa...he really has no clue, does he??

Well I think the first Tide player to win a Heisman will be celebrated in a different way, not because Alabama covets an individual award, but because this player would have accomplished something no other Bama player has. I'm not gonna sit back and act like I wouldn't care if a Bama player won it, it's a great achievement. That being said, i'll gladly take a BCS title between the two.

P.S. I think it was an absolute crime that Shaun Alexander wasn't even invited to the ceremony in 1999. You seriously wanna tell me Ron Dayne was better than Shaun that year? I think not and will argue that to the grave.

I never take anything seriously that dumb and dumber on CBS say during the game, can't stand either of them. As for us not having a heisman as of yet, it doesn't matter, but I can almost guarantee you we'll have one within the next 2-3 years at the rate we're recruiting high quality players.

Shaun was on the invitee list but was bumped by freshman michael "the dog killer" vick. This thug was considered the best thing since toilet paper. How can you not invite a fifth year senior that broke most rushing records, TD records, not to mention a fine honorable young man. What a bunch of morons.

Personally, I could care less if one of Bama's fine players never wins that bogus award. It use to be awarded by talent and merit, now it's politicized, just like most of college football is today.

Roll Tide

Don't kid yourselves - if/when we ever have a Heisman Trophy winner, we'll all think it's incredibly cool that the player was recognized and won the award. Until then we'll just act like it's totally unimportant.

That being said, Lundquist is a disaster. He offers little/no insight into the game, only bringing up the occasional tidbit he's been fed by the productino team. The only reason he has a gig is due to some warped sense of tenure.

LOL. If a BAMA player ever wins the Heisman, the MODs should just delete all threads about it since it is unimportant. ;)

Ditteaux!

Let's focus on lucky number 13 (actually 18 or so in my tally). Ole verne is getting older, just like me. He can't help it.

:BigA:ROLL TIDE! ROLL!

Both points are exactly on the money.

Individual awards can be won without hindering a team's drive for a championship.

However, the Heisman has no doubt turned into a media popularity contest (perhaps it always was) and because of that, it's value is tarnished, IMO.

I'd like to see a BAMA player win it, so as to add to our history. But our history does not suffer because of it's absence.

I would argue that it makes our history even more impressive, since we have never had "the best player in college football", yet we've won so many titles with such inferior talent. :)

And I totally agree on the post about Shaun Alexander. What counts more, TDs or yards... I could really care less how many yards a running back runs for, as long as he finds the endzone an abnormally high number of times.

What killed Shaun's chances in 1999--whether it was for the award itself or just the invite--was that he suffered a high ankle sprain against Tenn and missed two games. The Heisman is all about media momentum, and Shaun lost his.

Let's face it. Most Heisman winners these days play for teams that are having outrageously good seasons. If or when Alabama has one of those winners, then double dandy! As for grinding me personally as a fan? I slept real well last night and the thought of Alabama having no Heisman winners has yet to affect my job performance today.

Good God people- Some of you are acting like he is the head of the Taliban.
Do you really believe that Vern, that has done SEC football for many years, sits in a meeting and says lets screw Alabama. (some of you think this)
>
He really has little control of what goes on during a lull in the action. these things are done by producers well in advance of Vern even arriving in Tuscaloosa. Some of you think Vern just thought of this and by luck- the producers just happen to have a video tape cued up in the truck. Man quit picking out every word or we may get Ara Parseghian back behind the mic.

yes he said a few thing that I thought should have been corrected but don't blame someone that loves SEC football for everything wrong in the world.

I know how some people around feel, but for my money, I had rather have heard ole Keith Jackson do a college football game than anyone alive. I loved the long departed Curt Gowdy do NFL games. He was the voice of the old AFL on NBC and did tons of Jet games when Joe Willie first came to that league. He was one of the best also. I like Michaels also. I will never forget his call in the final seconds of the USA hockey team's win over the Soviets. Jim Nance is good also. But, there seems to be a real lack of great play by play talkers now. There is an over abundance of so called color talkers as nearly every ex-jock alive now thinks he is an expert on TV. We can thank ESPN for that.
