As expected, Clowney picks USCe

We keep talking around the fact that Clowney can go to Columbia, play with several of his high school buds and before a huge hometown contingent, work under a legendary head coach and still play at the very highest level of his sport.

It's not as if he'll be sacrificing everything just to play close to home.

I'm pretty sure most of us realize that he's got the talent to succeed at any school of his choosing but I believe what most Bama fans that want him are trying to say is the odds of him winning a national championship in college is greater with UA than USCe. That may not be the thing that motivates him the most but it has to be on his mind somewhat.

I just wonder how much his mother's influence will have on him. I did not pay that much attention to his last comment when interviewed at the UA deal by ESPN but I thought he said his mom would have a tremendous impact on where he ended up. It just sounds like to me that he will be at USCe regardless. If that is the case, I guess a national champsionship just is not a priority with him. Maybe he sees himself going to the NFL early and just wants to be close to home at a school that can be competitive.

It is possible to have too much Big Fish for the Little Bowl.

It's all in how you look at it and it's all relative. Helping lead USC to its first ever SEC title would make Clowney a legend for life in the State. Leading Bama to yet another national title would make him one of many greats to do so. The odds of winning a title are better at Bama and I'm sure that's something Bama sells hard on the recruiting trail (as they should), but the opportunity to do something that's never been done before at your home state school is also appealing, and yes, USC is closer than they've been since joining the SEC. Still many pieces missing, but assumming Green and Jones and Ingram bolt, USC returns the top WR and the top RB in the SEC. Bama has a number of decades with more great seasons than USC's entire 100+ years of football. USC obviously cannot compete with that. But there are other important things to these kids... most important being a path to the nfl - and USC does offer that about as well as Bama or any of the other big-time SEC programs. The kid would not be an idiot to choose USC, that's all I'm saying.

off topic and I know your all homered up and everything, but USC will never win an SEC title while clowney is there...its all down hill from this year which still saw 5 losses.

I believe its just the appeal to play for your child hood favorite team, and the pressure to stay in state is crazy in SC, like "brick through window" crazy, not to mention staying close to home appeals to some kids as much as a getting away.

The NFL coaches love defensive players coached by Saban and Smart. They know these players will be well coached in fundamentals and well disciplined on the field. This could bring on a higher draft status. Clowney has a lot of stuff to weigh against playing for the home state team.

Playing for a 3-4 defense and practicing against a pro style offense would benefit JC more since clearly the NFL is very much in his future. Most NFL teams work with that setup and that's why NFL coaches want defensive players from Bama. College game is more spread offense and 4-3 which means that if you draft someone with that knowledge you would have to teach them quite a bit their first year in the NFL and USCe runs more of a 4-3 defense. Not saying he's picking us but I think we have a chance b/c if I'm saying this stuff then you know CNS is saying this and more than likely much better than I did too.

I don't know why I'm standing up for you, but I really do think you have all relevant points (just like your earlier post). Clearly, I think your homerism is allowing you to see USCe future brighter than it will be in reality and I also disagree that you return the 'best' RB in the SEC (say hi to Richardson for me). All that said, I think the line to the NFL is pretty legit at USCe as well and they would be an understandable choice for Clowney... but I still hope he picks the good guys.

I think TRPC hit the nail on the head, SC is where he is headed and where it's always been and we should move to someone that really wants to play for the TIDE. Desire to play for the TIDE means a whole more than just saying i think i'll go!! "ROLL TIDE!!!!!"

You just witnessed the best season USC will ever have before and after Jadeveon ever hit's campus. If this is the kind of season USC get's excited about, well that should tell you all you need to know.

We need to keep after the players that want to play for championships, and not just SEC titles, but NC. It has to mean something to him more than just playing for a team with a winning record.

USC hit a sweet spot in 2010. Florida has their worst team in 20 years, Georgia has their worst team in 20 years, They play WAY above their heads in one game and one game only and it happens to be against Alabama, they do get to the SEC title game which I'm sure was exciting for a quarter until Auburn got warmed up and then obliterated them like a high school team.

Clowney appears to be an amazing talent, and he can get to the NFL playing anywhere in the SEC. But he won't be wearing any rings if he goes to USC. Nothing wrong with that if USC is the place for him. But if he wants to play for championships he will just have to make a different choice.

I rarely ever post on threads. Usually I just like to lurk and get the latest scoop on various recruits. Now this is not meant to bash any one in particular but I feel that we should really be careful when saying things like USC or various other programs will not win NC's or any other accolades. I didn't think that the Barn would be in the BCS NC game this year but look @ where they are today. Making statements like that can come back to bite you. It makes us(Bama fans) look extremely arrogant and @ times, downright foolish. Our coaches do not negatively recruit and Bama is the class program of the SEC. As such we, as fans, should be classy as well by pointing out the good in our program and leave the bashing to the others.
With that said, do I feel that we as fans chatting on message boards can significantly hurt our chances for landing a recruit? Most certainly not!! However, I do feel that by being classy @ all times we can certainly help.
Good luck to Jadeveon, regardless of where he decides to go. If he decides that USC(a great SEC program) is the best place, then good for him. I wish him the best, except when he plays us. If he decides to come to Alabama(the class of the SEC), then ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

With Bo Davis leaving us and taking a gig with Texas, Clemson DE coach Chris Rumph is our top target as his replacement. Rumph is the lead recruiter at Clemson for Clowney's services. Good target by Coach Saban. Hopefully we can land both

tungi, I agree.

Two years ago, I would never have thought:
1. Stanford would win the Orange Bowl, going 12-1.
2. USC would be a middle of the pack Pac-10 team.
3. Texas wouldn't make a bowl game.
4. Florida and Georgia would go a combined 14-12.
5. Oregon and Auburn would play for the title.
I mean, these are just a few off the top of my head.

Yeah, it was a down year for the East. Who is to say there wouldn't be another down year soon? What if Muschamp is a failure, Richt brings Georgia further down to the point they can't well recover quickly, Dooley doesn't turn Tennessee around, and Spurrier is left to win the East a few years in a row simply due to a down East division?
I would never predict that, but it is by no means impossible. Clowney probably thinks that he might be the difference. To say that there is no way South Carolina could win the SEC over the next 4-5 years seems a bit foolish, especially since they played for the championship about a month ago. Six months ago, it would have been easy to say that it would be impossible for South Carolina to represent the East in the SEC Championship game.

It is very interesting that CNS is going after Rumph immediately. Obviously this could be a game changer in relation to Clowney's recruitment. Not to mention that Rumph would be a great replacement for Bo Davis.
