After watching the game in person, thought I would post a couple of items of interest to everyone.
First, it seems like we made a concerted effort tonite to work on the half-court game... AS didn't exactly kill our running game, and it appeared we were trying to get some game experience in that phase of the game. Right now, the worst thing is our spacing... and movement without the ball. However, I expect both things will improve with time.
Second, the effort is vastly improved from the Gottfried era. Particularly on the defensive end, you can tell a lot of emphasis has been placed on hard traps in the corners... and that particular setup caused a good number of turnovers this evening.
Third, though the effort is better, our rebounding on both ends of the court will leave a lot to be desired IMO. Just from my perspective, I would say that the games in which we shoot a high % from the floor, we can win. However, when we shoot 35-40%, look for us to possibly be blown out because we're not able to create a lot of second chance points.
Of all the newcomers, Mitchell looks the best to me right now... though Hines seems to be coming along well also. Anthony Brock seems to be first choice at the point right now... possibly because Torrence tends to dribble too much - a holdover from the Gottfried years. Tonight, Green had two fouls four minutes in... and AS handled us pretty well without him in the lineup.
All in all, I expect a lot of things (i.e. sloppy play) to improve over the course of the season. However, while we may be able to surprise a team or two due to effort alone, this is definitely going to be a year of rebuilding... and we are going to have to patience and support Coach Grant in his efforts to transform this program into a perennial contender. RTR!!!
