Anyone have any potential insight in to would we play on Friday or Saturday? It looks like there is one game scheduled for Friday 12/20 and three games on Saturday 12/21...

I don't think they have said anything about this yet. I would imagine they would want a big one for the Friday night opener. So, Alabama @ Notre Dame could be a strong candidate.

Agreed, but one could also argue that they didn't have to rank SMU ahead of Alabama, but they did.
That’s because there is a 2 loss difference. (Myself and others have called the ACC a 1 bid league. That’s true in most cases but IMO, there are exceptions. E.g., if two undefeated teams were to meet in the ACCCG, the loser would likely get in over any 3 loss SEC or B10 team or even a 2 loss Indiana-type team.).

Hence, in their mind, SMU is legitimately ahead of Alabama at this time but won’t be if they were to incur a second loss (hopefully). I personally agree with that reasoning, though it calls into question the logic of penalizing a team for participating in a conf CG. But they would likely say something like “it was simply another data point which revealed weakness” then quickly exit stage left.

In summary, they feel that they can justify a 1 loss difference but not a 2 loss difference.

Local UGA fans say that Bama doesnt deserve to be in because of 3 bad losses and that SC deserves to be in over Ole Miss and they didnt make the SECCG.........last year Bama made and won the SECCG and they said they deserved to be in over Bama because of their resume..........and in both years Bama beat UGA..............they and everyone else dont want Bama in...........and it makes you wonder why
If losing to OU and Vandy is bad, then losing to the team that lost to OU and Vandy must be bad, too.

I say they should drop UGA from the field.

Remember how the 12-team playoff was going to solve everything. I see no difference except it's the 13th and 14th seeded teams crying.
They thought it would keep Bama from winning the natty as much, but they actually created a system where Bama may get in every single year. Joke's on them.

I'm still of the opinion that SMU will take a tumble if they lose, and logically I think the only way they don't is if the committee is convinced they still played better than Clemson. For instance, if Clemson wins on a late blown call or something and everyone looks at it and goes oh they deserved to win.

Otherwise they just become a team that's 0-2 to the top 25 and just lost to the 17th ranked team.

But, the committee still makes me nervous. I decided to look at some other losers in conference championship games last year. I've discussed Georgia enough that I'll skip them.

#5 Oregon lost to #3 Washington and fell to 8th. Notably they fell below idle Ohio State.

#14 Louisville lost to #4 FSU they (both) dropped one spot. Idle 9-3 Arizona did jump 10-3 Louisville. A few teams below Louisville also lost though, making it harder for someone to jump them.

#16 Iowa lost to #2 Michigan and only fell one spot as well. They were 10-3 and were jumped by 9-3 Notre Dame.

#18 Oklahoma St. lost to #7 Texas and only fell one spot as well. They at 9-4 were jumped by 8-4 Oregon St.

#22 Tulane lost to unranked SMU and fell out of the rankings. SMU replaced them at 24, both teams were 11-2.

This doesn't really set my mind at ease too much, although I also don't see a lot of room for teams to jump much further in those scenarios. It was basically teams with the same records, and teams losing to higher ranked teams. The only real upsets were Georgia and Tulane losing and both those teams fell several spots.

Based on this though, I'd say there's nearly a 100% chance SMU does fall if they lose to Clemson, the question is just how far. That's one reason I want Boise State to lose, in that scenario SMU could only fall one spot without getting passed by Alabama, and it's hard to imagine the #8 team only dropped one spot after losing to the #17 team.

I would love to see that matchup but I think it's pretty unlikely.

Alabama, if it makes the CFP, will be #10 or #11. That means it will be play #6 or #7.

Unless Penn State upsets Oregon, Notre Dame will move past Penn State in the rankings and end up as the 5th seed, not 6th.

More likely opponents for us (if we end up as #11) are:
* Ohio State if Penn State loses to Oregon
* Texas if it loses to UGA
* Penn State if it loses against Oregon and the committee doesn't really push PSU down much
* Tennessee if Penn State loses to Oregon and Texas beats UGA

I hear you, but it is just as likely that a UGA win could only drop Texas to 5 and ND still at 6. Or the committee could decide to but a Clemson winner or an ASU winner right above us at 11 to prove some kind of point and we are 12 and could pull ND in the 5v12 match. There are still a lot of scenarios and movement ahead.

All the fringe teams and their fan bases are whining 11-15 or so.

The Top 10 is safe except SMU

But anybody complaining about those last two spots just needs to shut up and win their games.

Wanne be in… Don’t lose 2-3 games.

Tenn loss isn’t bad.

Top 10 rivalry game on the road and still kept the score close for the most part with a QB who couldn’t throw the ball in the Ocean from a Boat.

It’s Vandy that’s bad and OU that’s unforgivable.

The Vandy loss hurts more due to history.
Their resume this year is pretty legit.
OU was horrible…

I can't get past it and can't think of a single worse loss in my life when you take the context into account wrt the stakes and completely no showing in effort and preparation.

I understand that people think I'm being harsh about it but I feel I'm justified in it.

I have softened a bit because if I were on the committee right now with the final say I'd send them to Orlando for the Citrus Bowl.

They've had a season in totality that's good enough to go there as the 4th best SEC team or so.

If I had the final say the night of the OU game I'd have sent them to Shreveport.

I don't even know if a Bowl game is still there but that's where I'd have sent them and they could find their way back.
