I know it is less than 2 weeks before Football Signing Day, but I would like to open a thread on our incoming basketball recruits. Seeing as now we will have 7 open scholarships next year, does anyone have any insight on who the remaining 3 spots will go to. The 7'2 Jason Bennett looks like a definite possibility. But I was wondering if anyone knew how interested he is in the Tide, and if there are any other possibilites.

I may be wrong but I believe you can't sign 7 recruits any one year. They make it so 4 or 5 is the max, but I may be wrong and would be pleased if I was.

I thought that they got rid of those limits last year. They used to have a 8 recruit in 2 year rule, with no more than 5 in one year. Then how do Auburn and Georgia account for their entire teams that are made up of freshmen.

13 is the limit for men's basketball. CMG has signed 4 to LOI's in the early signing period. According to rivals.com, Jason Bennet has Alabama in the lead. But, rivals had Tebow going to UA. If he signs during the spring signing period, that means schools can sign a max of 5 per year. Felix and Brock leave after this year. If the remaining players stay, we'll have 10 scholarship players next year.

There was a hint of a big-time recruit making an announcement soon by one of the mods last week. I think that it's Bennett. If he's a Jeremy Hays-type, then he'll be a good recruit.

I too thought that the 8 in 2 rule had been changed. I guess we'll know soon enough.

If Jermario goes pro we'll really be up against it. I've never seen anything to compare. I know 3 or 4 left Auburn when they fired the coach 2 years ago, but that was a different circumstance.

the names escape me, but there is some good talent giving us a look currently. Bennett may depend on where Hutchins lands as a HC. Those two got close, but Bama is in good shape as it stands.

The 8 in 2 rule has been changed. Now it is just the max number of scollied per team. Not exactly sure of the number.

EDITED to say that this was another one of the dumb rules created by the NCAA that failed.

Although he insists that's not true, I think you're right. I can't quite get a grip for how real his new found interest in Bama is, but he says all the right things.

At any rate, he would be a huge pickup in a class lacking a standout star. From what I hear, his offensive game has massively improved (and continues to do so), and as a result he's done nothing but rise in the rankings.

UNC lost 7 players last year. Only Jackie Manuel, Jawad Williams, and Melvin Scott were Seniors. Including walk-ons UNC had 16 players on their roster, only 5 are back this year.

We have to figure out how to stop the bleeding, if not it will bite us down the road.

It is biting us now, not to mention what is going to happen down the road. Our lack of quality depth hampered us against LSU. It is just to hard playing that many minutes against top competition, you will get worn down.

Pardon, but I left out Y. Coleman.

We have 8 on scholarship, but 7 available. Next year would give us 11 if CMG signs 1 more (i.e. Jason Bennett).

I think the loss to LSU was due to more than just a lack of quality depth. LSU has only played 6 guys with significant minutes and they're 4-0 right now. The other two (Rolle and Voogd) have averaged playing single digit minutes in their SEC games.
We lost that game because the refs let Glen Davis shove JD around too much and they just made more plays than we did. It'll be a different game next Sat. in CC.

UConn won the NC two years ago playing only 7 guys. Wimp only played 7 guys on that '87 team that won more games than any other UA team. There's nothing wrong w/ playing only 7 guys, but you want those 7 to be really good.

North Carolina has six signed for 2006 according to Rivals - not sure that is the max, but, obviously we should be able to sign at least that many, too.

Basketball Recruits

I know we have four players signed in the early period, but does anyone have any thoughts on who we might have a good shot at in the Spring? I would think we sign at least one more Big since we could be down to a SO and RSF as the only Bigs we have if Jemaro decides to jump to the NBA. The only name I have seen mentioned is the big Center down in FL, but it doesn't seem like Bama is leading from what I've seen. I see there is a really good Big down in Dothan but he is only a JR. We need somebody this year.

A few weeks ago I would have said we would not sign anyone...but after Jonus left, who knows?

Usually, teams do not sign anyone in the Spring Period.
