Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

I'll admit from the get go I'm just a 66 year-old woman who's been an Alabama fan for life.and I simply don't understand why Ty continues to play. It was obvious in the game against Georgia that something was desperately wrong. .But again, I'm just an observer. The way I look at it is if you love your team as much as you say you do , maybe you should give somebody else a shot. Kind of like Sabin did with Tua . I'm not really confident about the game tomorrow night, but I'm praying the boys will surprise me. Either way I love my team. Roll Tide !!!

This is from an article in The Athletic about Ty Simpson with quotes from his dad (Jason) about his physical condition:

"Injuries have been part of the story for Alabama – including an injury to Ty’s back that won’t require surgery but has not had the needed rest to heal fully.

"Jason said Ty has required epidurals in his back before the past few games, and that he was sick the week leading into Auburn because of an anti-inflammatory drug that created too much acid in his stomach.

“But look, NFL quarterbacks, SEC players, college players at UT-Martin, they all have to play through stuff like that,” Jason said.

"Oklahoma and Georgia have great defenses. Sometimes Ty isn’t getting enough help from teammates. But as Jason has pointed out to him – they talk every Sunday morning after Jason has a chance to go through the coaches’ tape of the Alabama game – there are times he needs to just go with the first read on a play rather than hunt something bigger and allow the pass rush to reach him."

No clues as to 2026. I didn't include the link because it's a subscription site (not sure of the rules on that), but in case you subscribe to The Athletic, here's the story's title:

Ty Simpson stayed at Alabama when others would have left, but that’s just family tradition

Thank you - now hopefully those who kept insinuating that those saying Ty was injured were wrong will finally accept it.

Question is, if first half Ty in Norman resembles first half Ty in Atlanta, does Coach make a QB change? Second question is, does a hurt Ty give us a better chance at winning than any of the other two healthy QBs on the roster?

Great post! We are all observers here and I could ditto all you say. Thing is, true competitors want to play even when the best option for the team is to sit and let someone else go. Frankly, that is up to the coaches to make that determination and since none of us are in practice everyday, we don't know if the decision being made is based on a hurt Ty being the better option than a healthy substitute. Of course, the second string QB has always been the rockstar at Alabama and that much has not changed.

I mean... tossing Mack into the fire is a bad idea...

But if Ty is not capable, might as well and see what happens over just rolling over and dying on the field.

This staff has had enough time since the SEC title game to get backups more substantial reps. Not saying who should or should not play but I hope a plan is in place.

Agreed... If Ty clearly can't get it done, I'd like to see them make a change.

We were screaming at the TV during the bowl game to get Milroe out. He was soooo bad. I'd rather have had Ty out there getting reps and see what he could do.

The spooners are game planning against Ty. That may or may not matter but starting the game with another QB may through them off. It won't happen but we need to throw their D off their gameplan somehow.

CKD stated earlier that we have 3 future NFL QBs in the program. If that’s true Mack should be a better option than Ty if he’s too disabled to perform any better than we’ve seen lately. If he’s not, then at least we would have proof of it.

And if Mack is truly an NFL caliber QB, then after 3 years in the program he should be about ready to make a move.

Take a snapshot of where we are in time. Yea, could be we have 3 NFL guys on roster. But right now, Ty is the leader of this team. That combined with his skill set is the reason he is starting.

A little over a week ago, I was in the camp that we should take the time between the SECCG and the Oklahoma game to get Mack ready to start. If Ty really has been able to get healthier the last twelve days and the coaches have pounded into his head about getting the ball out quicker, then I feel better about him starting tonight. I will say though, if we come out looking offensively like we did against UGA on the first three or four drives, then DeBoer needs to make the switch. I think our defense will keep us in the game regardless.

Yes... The coaches have a big responsibility to call the plays to get the ball out and get the ball snapped earlier so that they can't tee off the game clock. We can't leave Ty back there to get pummeled.
