It was a natural match: Big Red gum and Nebraska Cornhuskers football, whose fans had long been shouting "Go Big Red" from the stands.
The legendary coach Tom Osborne thought so too. Team trainer Doak Ostergard started giving "Dr. Tom" a pack of Big Red gum before each game in the early 1990s. At Osborne's last game with the Huskers, the 1998 Orange Bowl, the Associated Press observed that he "stood on the sideline calmly chewing his favorite Big Red gum, acting as if there would still be a next season." The team handed their beloved coach one final victory that day.
Osborne and Nebraska were a powerful winning combination, capturing national titles in 1994 and 1995 and appearing in bowl games every year for 25 consecutive years. Osborne was the winningest coach in the history of the Associated Press football poll and the sixth winningest coach in NCAA Division I-A history. He retired with a lifetime record of 255-49-3. From 1993 to 1997, years in which he chewed Big Red, his record was 60-3. According to Mike Osborne, son of the great coach, this incredible record "must have had something to do with the gum."
