Re: Blowhole's coming back on the Air:

I really, really, REALLY wish someone would explain to me what a person can hope to accomplish by expressing negative feelings about a guy like PF. I seriously do. The way I see it, PF has clearly said...."I can make more $$$ by ticking people off than I can by trying to be insightful or by steering clear of the shock value type stuff. Yes...the more I appeal to the mindless anger, fanaticism, and insanity among the CFB fans here the more they will flock to me and line my pockets with $$$"....

Imo, this is truly the type of revelation he had in his early days and it has made him a very rich man and turned him into the sports talk star of the state. I don't think there's any real question about how well it's worked for him.

Back to my question....For those who claim they dislike him....how can they possibly think that giving him free advertising hurts him? PF, I would imagine, LOVES for people to spew hatred towards and about him. It directly turns into $ in his pockets. And how can you hate him if your not listening in to know what it is that you hate about him in the 1st place? I lived most of my life in Alabama and I never cared for his show so I just didn't tune in. Sure, I'd have someone mention him from time to time but for the most part he just wasnt on my radar because I didn't tune in.

I think that the biggest haters and protesters of PF are, in fact, his listeners and his true advertising army. His FREE advertising army I should say. I just don't get why people don't just own up to it and admit that they like him and that they tune in. If you honestly dislike him, why promote him?

Interesting an ESPN affiliate goes down in flames. They say it is because the market will not support 2 sports talk shows. (I don't buy that.) How 'bout their station stinks? You notice that was not a possible cause. Maybe their inability to consider that is why it is gone.

Still, the PTB, in Bristol, can't be happy. (Good!)

Even Eli's show was not good, sorry.

I don't care for FB or his callers, but he has some very good guest, I do miss that. Some of the stuff out of Pat Dye's mouth was just priceless. Herbie was Great, Mac was ok, CGS was very good & Danielson was much better on his show than on TV.

If Jack & Geno can get rid of the p shuck conversation that would be a great show & Packer's show is good. Brando, forget it, just makes me made.
I listen to a lot more music on XM now.

You nailed that. Pat Dye had some classics and Paul knows exactly how to push his buttons.

Oh no! Does this mean no more Rachael Baribeau?? Say it ain't so! :eek2: What was the deal with her anyway? I kept hearing about how "phenomenal" she was, and then I tuned into the show she was on and it was all I could do to keep from laughing. She was worse than Kelly Hunter, and that is really saying something. All I ever heard her say was "football is a thing of beauty", "I'm super excited about the upcoming game between this team and that team", "Dan Mullen had two timeouts left, what was he thinking", and "that stinks like cheese east of France". Is it any wonder that the station is gone after this week?

Re: Blowhole's coming back on the Air:

There's money to be made by pushing peoples buttons. I think of the PF show kind of like 'Wrestling'. You know it's choreographed, but you watch the characters play their part. That said... PF appeals to lots of people. Some listen for the callers... Others for his guest. I fell into the later group. It's yet to be determined if he can do on a National scale the things he did in Birmingham. It's a fact that the South isn't the only part of the country with yokels... It doesn't matter where you go, there are beer guzzling, pick-up truck driving, shotgun shooting, good ole boys, who all think their teams play pretty good football. ( Whether we like to admit it or not, we all know a 'Tammy'...) I think ESPN made the right decision for money reasons. It's better than a couple of their other decisions.

Re: Blowhole's coming back on the Air:

Hate to see The Zone shut down only because I liked Scarbinsky's show. He changed my opinion of him.

This begs the question - What channels get Finebaum if an ESPN radio station can't pick him up?

I'll admit that Finebaum's high points were during the Shula years with Vickers riding shotgun. Painful at times, but really, really funny

I've tried to listen a couple of times over the years, I simply don't understand the interest.

Re: Blowhole's coming back on the Air:

I don't listen to Finebaum live. With ESPN saying that they want Finebaum to be himself I'll doubt I'll tune in. I did podcast his interviews. Often they were worth listening to. I do have a couple of questions though. Is JOX going back to being an ESPN affiliate? If not, will CBS allow a national ESPN show be syndicated on their radio station? I assume that if the $$ is right they will, and with Finebaum coming back it would bring advertising dollars to the station.

Another good thing coming from this will be the Roundtable moving back to mid-afternoon show (I assume this is true). And, we get rid of that awful Matt and Scot Spectacular. I tried to give that show a chance. It is awful.

Re: Blowhole's coming back on the Air:

the Birmingham market cannot support 2 sports talk radio stations at the same time...during the off-season

it's easy to make it big during football season...because people around here care...but during the off-season the stuff just isn't there to fill the time slots

if we were a professional sports market that had teams active year-round it would be different...but around here the only time enough people care about sports talk radio is August-January

I don't think Finebaum cares about being on 94.5 v. 97.3, he just didn't want his bosses to be the people who own 94.5.

Re: Blowhole's coming back on the Air:

97.3 The Zone always seemed amateurish to me. The ads were so sophomoric and lame. They kept playing with their line up which is never a good thing.

I'd like to see the Round Table on 94.5 in the AM, then the Sports Czars from 10-2pm and then Finebaum after that. Then they can have whatever national stuff they have. Although I'd say the CBS national programs are awful. Maybe 94.5 can go back to being an ESPN affiliate, they're not so bad.

Re: Blowhole's coming back on the Air:

Paul Finebaum is an "opinionists" pure and simple. He's not a football expert (x's and o's) and has never claimed to be, but he is an expert on football fans.

His show on Jox in the past has been a microcosm of football in Alabama, except the rational fan of either school isn't what gets the ratings so they highlight the "fanatics" from either side.

I do think PF speaks a lot of truth and that just makes fans mad when their school is "down" and it has gone both ways for us and the Barn.

As "Agent" said earlier in the thread, just don't listen if you don't like his show, but if you do listen why gripe about it!

He has like a "Who's Who" of CFB on his program regularly and he's a pretty dang good interviewer.

I don't care much for his regulars, most of which I believe are scripted, but I do enjoy hearing the SEC angst from the butthurt B1G callers.

Bottom line....I don't listen to it expecting sweeping social commentary, it's just entertainment, nothing more. IMO, it's worlds better than most of the crap on TV these days.

Re: Blowhole's coming back on the Air:

My favorite part are the guests like Herbie and other sports personalities to get their take. I can't really stomach the callers. Every now and then I'll be in a knuckle dragging mood and will listen to the callers. I dang sure don't listen to improve my IQ. Listening to FB with expectations of professionalism and integrity is like going to McDonalds and expecting five star fine dining food and service. You'll be let down evah-time!!!
