Since it took off like it did I thought I would start this to get it in its own thread. First of all, Butch is a proven HC. Granted it has been a while and some may want to put him in the same class as say Steve Spurrier, as a has been. All that aside his record speaks volumes. He is a proven Jimmy Johnson protege. He followed Jimmy around for 15 yrs. He was the WR and TE coach for OK St, then went with Jimmy to Miami as the DL coach during the glorified "The U" years winning a NC in 1987. He and Jimmy left Miami to go to the Dallas Cowboys, the team went 1-15 their 1st yr and then went on to win back-2-back Super Bowls. He was the DL coach until 1993 when Dave Wannstedt stepped down. Jimmy left in after 93' but he stayed under Barry Switzer through 94' until he took the HC job as Miami. Now one has to take into account that he took over the Miami program in the middle of NCAA sanctions and terrible circumstances. After all of this his last yr Miami went 11-1 and finished #2 in the country and the next yr after his departure they won the NC in 2001 under Larry Coker. After this he went back to the NFL to coach the Cleveland Browns another abysmal team and wasn't that successful but not many have been able to win at Cleveland so I give him a mulligan. Browns aside he has a proven track record of restoring programs, while he hasn't as successful or as quick as Saban, I say the jury is still out we will find out soon enough.

He took the UNC job in Nov of 2006 where he came in and his 1st recruiting class while not all his boasted a #14 ranking with 4 top 100, 1-5 star, and 11-4 star recruits. In 2008 his class dropped to 30th but still had 11-4 star recruits respectively. His 2009 class made dramatic improvement all the way up to 6th with 4 top 100, 1-5 star, and 10-4 star, and 12-3 star recruits. Butch's class this yr is behind admittedly but it still early and he does have a top 100 recruit already and has time to close well.

On top of all this he has 2 recruiters on his staff ranked in the top 25 recruiters nationally, John Blake and Tommy Thigpen. So time will tell whether he can continue his trend of rebuilding programs and winning titles.

He was hired in Nov of 2006, before that he has an extensive coaching career. He followed Jimmy Johnson forever....coached under Jimmy at OK St, Miami during the late 80's, then followed him to the Cowboys where they won 2 Super Bowls,Jimmy left the Cowboys and he stayed another yr, then later went back to Miami as a HC, then HC of Cleveland Browns, and finally to UNC.

since Nov, 2006? Then why are the elite recruits just now showing through? I havent seen any top 5 recruiting classes from the tar heels since Saban's been here, thats just when I started following recruiting.. It seems this year, out of nowehere, he's just been grabbing tons of talent, particularly at OL, Not to mention, I dont see UNC in the top 5, 10... 15... 25... They're not ACC champs, they're not playing in any marquee bowl games. Whats the deal there?

I've heard the watch out for Butch hype for a couple years now. He has been bringing in better talent but has not put up the wins to show it. Time to deliver.:BigA:

His recruiting this year has fallen way back and has been very odd. Arrived very late to the party for Allen and Fulton (who said early on the Heels were his favorite but they never offered). He lost out on Alfy to us. Just got dropped by Marcus Lattimore.

Again, there are a couple of months left, but the Heels are losing far more of the recruiting battles than they are winning. All this, after their season ended on a terrible note -- a loss in a rivalry game to a poor N.C. State team, which is sending Carolina back to Charlotte for the Meineke Bowl.

All in all, the Heels and Davis have underperformed this year -- on the field and in recruiting. Butch has been OK, but not more than that.

This pretty much sums it up...I though after last yr's class that Butch was on the right track, now after seeing them slump this far down this yr...especially having 2 other guys on his staff that rated in the top 25 recruiters nationally, makes me wonder??? Is it the staff's ability I don't think so. Is is b/c they can't attract anything but Bball players to UNC, probably starting to get warmer. I would like to see the $$$ split for Bball vs FB at UNC....I imagine it is all Bball of course and maybe this is why they are lacking in the recruiting area or maybe they are all overrated as coaches and recruiters who knows but that fact remains that they ARE NOT getting it done in his 3rd yr...exactly how you put it on the field or in the recruiting.

I like Butch Davis, I think what he's done with UNC is a remarkable job and he is the man Notre Dame should be going crazy over. I think he's an elite head coach and if a team like LSU fires that idiot and gets him with their resources, the West could get extremely tight.

I like him, too, and wonder how life would have been different if he had stuck to his handshake and become our coach.

That said, UNC had a disappointing year based on what you'd expect Davis to accomplish after this much time at Chapel Hill. And the falloff of his recruiting this year has been stark. Maybe he'll finish with a flourish, but giddyup time is clearly upon him.

Your point about Butch ending up at a place like LSU . . . scary.
