BYU game, "illegal" hit?

In the BYU v Utah St game, a Utah state DB comes accross the middle, in the end zone and hits a BYU receiver. They called a PF on him and then ejected the DB. I thought it was a border line hit leaning toward clean but could understand the PF call. I think it was no way an ejection type call, but I wanted to consult with the most knowledgeable fans I know. For those that saw it, thoughts?

The defender launched high. If he had launched and kept it to the waist or lower, it wouldn't have been an issue.

Still, it was borderline, IMO. I could totally agree with the penalty, but I was shocked at the ejection.

It was a horrible call. It might not have been a penalty in the first place. We see bigger hits than that every week in the SEC, 10-20 of them, that never get called and shouldn't get called. As someone noted, the Vinnie Sunseri hit in the Penn State game was "worse" than this one.

But then to eject the player...wow. That's either complete incompetence or worse. I missed where this crew was from, but if BYU (as an independent) supplied the officials, they could have been picked from anywhere. Apparently this group came from the Provo Pee Wee League. That very well may have been the worst call I've ever seen in any game, topping the one in the UA-LSU game in 2004 (Keith Brown non-PI call).

Sunseri block was not the play I was referring to. Play that I am talking about was almost identical to the one tonight. Defenseless receiver getting cold cocked. NFL would have fined him 50K. I think the SEC refs at PSU were afraid to call the game correctly.

Did the Utah St. player "launch" high? = YES.
Was there head to head contact? = NO, the contact was shoulder to shoulder.

Penalty = questionable but not unexpected.
Ejection = ludicrous.

Utah State is a choke artist team. 96 yard drive in 2 minutes. Granted the refs let BYU get away with holding on the QB draw each time and they made a few miracle plays, but the Utah State still screwed the pooch big time. Worst team at finishing games this season.

the hit was actually not worthy of a call IMO though i could see a ref making that call because they dont have all angles to see it. It was shoulder to shoulder. same with the ejection. the guy just didnt have a clean look at the actual hit.

Yes, the hit was high, and the player left his feet to hit the guy, but he led with his shoulder pads into the offensive player's shoulder pads. There was no helmet to helmet contact. This was just a bad call to even call a penalty, not to mention a player getting ejected.

Of course the hit was high, he wasn't' trying to tackle the WR, he was trying to make sure he'd hit him high enough to jar the ball loose in case he caught it.

He was in the endzone, if he didn't go high, he might as well have given up. The hit was shoulder to shoulder. It was awful all the way around. If this is evidence of what college football will look like in 20 years, I might not be watching college football in 20 years.

that game made me angry and I didn't even care who won! Every time the BYU QB ran down the middle you could see 3-4 holding calls on either side of the running crease that was created. Without holding BYU would have gotten decimated! The good news is that with another loss *uburn cannot claim that the Ags are a good team.

I agreed with the penalty for launching. Looked like he also raised his forearm. Wonder if the fact he was a former BYU student athlete played into it? Just speculation but, he ran track at BYU but also wanted to play football. He transfers to one of BYU's rivals who let him play. Could have been some bad blood and something the refs were watching.

I saw that as well and thought to myself, "Apparently defense is not allowed in the WAC."
