What’s the deal with cereal and candy themed cars?

I’ve been seeing them everywhere. I’ve even seen an old Crown Victoria painted blue with Blockbuster Video written in big silver letters. The car was also sitting on 26” rims. Is there something I’m missing? These are obviously not promotional vehicles bought by the companies or brands in question. So why do people do this to their cars and give some random candy/food/whatever free marketing?

Examples I’ve found on the internet

Anyway, enough of that, you get the idea. Why is this happening? Color me confused. I’ve also seen a Skittles car driving around the Shoals area but was never bold enough to take a picture of it. If someone could give me some insight into this strange phenomenon, I’d love to hear it.

By the way, does this definitively make me a right wing Republican because I’m trying to understand why people are displaying their pride for their cereal or candy choices in such a gaudy or garish way?

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2vZZwPXQco]YouTube - Themed Cars, Candy and commercial product themed donks, boxes and bubble rides.[/ame]

I think they're mainly looking for a theme to build a custom job around, and it is just the current fad. It may help that race cars are covered in commercial brands.

You're not the first to wonder about this.

google themed donks for more.

"Hey kid, want some candy?"

I honestly don't think that's it, but it's the first thing that came to my mind.

But for now, the real effect of logo themes comes down to branding the donk itself. “It kind of gives the car a name,” Scott says — albeit a name borrowed from commercial culture. “All cars that have that kind of theme to them are better known.” Here, then, is what lies beyond the candy-colored, or even kandy-kolored, hot rod: the Skittles donk.

Here's a serious New York Times article from 2007 on the phenomenon.

Where is the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Car!!!!!! I need to sell the beamer and get one immediately!!!

You want to see something awful?

There's a customized UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE themed car that drives around Tuscaloosa.

It's a wonder it hasn't sparked mass instances of road rage.

If that's the same one I'm thinking of it's from Ozark Alabama. I'm friends with the guy on Facebook.
Is it the one with the orange checkered flag painted on the trunk?

I saw a New Jersey Devils car in my town yesterday. I've also seen a LA Lakers machine sporting about.

I know of a spot where I've seen these cars congregate on weekends. I may go check it out and see if i can get some pics.

Wow, didn't know it was that old of a fad, sad that is wasn't very brief. Amazing what some people will do to cars though.

Cheap paint job on a cheap car. If you're going to put your University colors on a car, you should at least do it with some style.
