CFN Bama Preview

Notice the top ten players they list for Bama.
One of them is Julio Jones. I can't wait to see this kid play!!
I'm sure the oposing teams don't want to see him.

Interesting take.

" Key player to a successful season: Senior DE Bobby Greenwood"

?

I can't agree there. It would be nice if Greenwood steps up and becomes a star player. If that's what Bama has to have to have a successful season, then I'm pretty worried.

Anyway, I think the performance of JPW is much more key.

I too was surprised they listed Greenwood as the key player to a successful season. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I thought these were neat though:

2007 Fun Stats:
- Penalties: Opponents 99 for 863 yards – Alabama 59 for 453 yards
- Punt return average: Alabama 13.7 – Opponents 6.6
- First quarter scoring: Alabama 117 – Opponents 44

I understand what you are saying, but I think he is making a point that we Bama will need to have a consistant pass rusher to take the place of WG. I agree with him on this. If we can't rattle some QBs, it will be a long season (again!).

CFN needs to do better homework. Listing Devonta Bolton and Melvin Ray is impact receivers? Do they have anyone who actually follows Alabama spot-checking this stuff?

EDIT: I guess the offensive part was written back in April. Still, they need to update.

I think a pass rusher off the end is great and would welcome one in 2008. But what might be of more importance is the middle of our DL and how well the NT gets a push or how well he commands double teams. If the DT position can get a good push or command constant double team a lot of players can "pass rush", not just a DE. But I agree that we need better pass rush from the DE position.

While I'm looking forward to JJ's play, I think I'm more interested in Messrs. Hightower, Harris, etc. at LB and ability to stop the run. Should be tested early with Clemson.

Good link. Thanks.

I agree with most of you. JPW, LB corp, and DE will have the biggest impact on this year's success. I think it is in that order of importance too.

I thought the most interesting comment was that nick walker was an nfl caliber tight end. GREAT I hope he shows that ability this year.

I think the key to us having a successful season in order of importance are..
(1) Vast improvement on the offensive front both in pass and run blocking
(2) JPW playing within himself, taking what the defense gives him, hitting a higher percentage of "should be" completions and reducing his turnovers, especially the silly ones(Miss. State)
(3) The emergence of an offensive threat that defenses have to focus on, whether it be Terry Grant, Julio, BJ, or possibly even Mike McCoy or Hanks. We need someone on offense capable of "scaring" a defense so they'll have to adjust their defense and open up opportunities for us.
(4) Vast improvement of the pass rush by our D-line. Last year we had to blitz to pressure the QB.
That puts incredible pressure on the secondary who are then forced to cover man to man. We simply have to have defensive linemen who can beat pass blocking and get to the QB quickly. This is probably my biggest area of concern but I still think the aforementioned three are more important for this particular team.
(5) More consistency in our field goal attempts.

Yeah I have to agree with a lot of his points. A good read. I agree with a lot of your though, that 2005 team was pretty good. Thanks for the link.
